I posted a thread on twitter about what I enjoy about mastodon, but I thought that maybe people on mastodon would also like hearing what I'm enjoying! So I'm reposting it here.
First, I love that you can follow hashtags. Just use the little follow button on the upper right when viewing a hashtag! For fun, I follow the wildly popular tags #mosstodon and #lichensubscribe for moss/lichen photos, plus #booktodon, #paleoart and #fossilFriday.
There are more serious tags as well! Sigmoid has a lot of paper summaries under #paperthread and #newpaper, which is a great way of following people's latest work. I also follow #nlp (which we own there!!! no hypnosis PUA shit!) and #nlproc.
Another really fun exploration feature is the ability to look at your local timeline, which is just all of the recent posts on your server. If you're on a specialty server like sigmoid, it's just as useful as your home feed!
By the way, unlike twitter, sigmoid has an often genuinely useful and interesting #Explore tab! I wanted to take a screen shot to show you all the cool stuff people are posting, but right now it's mostly chatter about the latest grievance is on twitter.
You can also visit another server and look at the people there and follow them! I found people to follow on https://dair-community.social/, https://lingo.lol/, https://mathstodon.xyz/, and https://data-folks.masto.host/. But guess what! I'm also following a ton of paleontologists and paleoartists from https://sauropods.win/!
P.S. Don't forget to add your handle to your bio or display name on Twitter! That way, other people can automatically follow you through apps like movetodon.
Forgot a few cool servers that you might want to check out. There's https://mastodon.acm.org and https://fediscience.org. There's also specialty servers for everything from PL theory to infosec to 18th century history. https://github.com/nathanlesage/academics-on-mastodon
@nsaphra does this violate their new policies, do you know?
@lasha_nlp Apparently it does! I'm not sure if it gets automatically blocked though.
