Zivan - Childless Cat Guy<p>I've finished: Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon</p><p> <br>When I read a novel that was written 30 years ago and speaks to me now, I wonder where I was when it was published. Would I have appreciated it as much back then as I do now and what are the market forces that didn't make the novel available to me back then. <br> <br>At the time, I was reading from a very small selection of translated work and the small English sci-fi shelf at the local library and bookstore. <br> <br>(My father did hand me Le Guin's The Word for World is Forest in the late 80s). <br> <br>This is the story of an old woman from a traditional society that has had enough and want's to live the rest of her life on her own terms and not be beholden to others. <br> <br>Sarah is grumpy, but not an annoying kind of grumpy. She has had enough of the patriarchy and simply no longer gives a shit. <br> <br>But then, first contact. She is frustrated that her solitude is infringed upon and new demands are made on her, but she rises to the challenge and her life skills come in handy. <br> <br>I loved her point of view and the ways she found to assert herself. <br> <br>By today's terms this novel may come under; Cozy and Found Family. </p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/audiobooks" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>audiobooks</span></a></span> <br><a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/ScienceFiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScienceFiction</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/faminism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>faminism</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/FirstContact" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FirstContact</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/amReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>amReading</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/AudioBooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AudioBooks</span></a></p>

Charlotte Walker<p>I’m halfway through a former Booker Prize winner I’d never heard of before it was on 99p kindle deal - Celestial Bodies by Jokha Alharthi, an Omani author whose work is originally written in Arabic. It’s the story of a wealthy family, the family’s slaves (slavery was only abolished in Oman in the 1970s!!), and their neighbours and extended family as they come to terms with the changes brought about by the mid-late 20th century. </p><p>Just been reading up on Oman and it’s still super patriarchal and an absolute monarchy when laws are created and issued at the Sultan’s decree. There is widespread censorship, repression of journalism, prohibition of political parties, and use of torture by police and security services. Despite all this it apparently has excellent, accessible healthcare. It has a burgeoning tourist industry but it’s not somewhere I’d feel comfortable visiting. </p><p><a href="https://beige.party/tags/amreading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>amreading</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a></p>

Charlotte Walker<p>I just finished reading Bewilderment by Richard Powers. An absolutely astonishing book, very tender and quite sad, about love and loss and being neurodiverse and how we treat animals and our planet. It’s given me a lot to think about. David Brent 📚<p>I discovered Stewart O'Nan when he collaborated with Stephen King on Faithful, their memoir of the historic 2004 Red Sox baseball season. Then I had the opportunity to briefly speak with him as part of my job - I helped him sort out a discrepancy with his hotel reservation at the 2011 ALA conference and he was very nice on the phone. Now I'm reading one of his books, Last Night at the Lobster. Zivan - Childless Cat Guy<p>I've finished: City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett</p><p> After I finished A Drop of Corruption, I was looking for more Robert Jackson Bennett. </p><p> City of Stairs is similar enough to the Shadow of the Leviathan Series to feel very familiar yet not so similar you feel like your reading the same story in a different location. <br> <br> This time the female is the lead, but she isn't infallible, and the male partner is an uncannily capable muscle. <br> <br> Like in the Leviathan novels, The story begins with a murder investigation that then reveals more and more about the world, the gods, the old imperial power and the new. Neither political system is admirable but our heroine intends to try and change things for the better. <br> <br>The premise is also quite unique, What if the rebels found a way to kill the empire's gods? What would an empire that has lost not only its gods but everything that was powered by their miracles look like after decades of occupation? <br> <br> <a href="https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/b092604c-3cdd-4088-9691-e3ce2d6d577d" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">app.thestorygraph.com/books/b0</span><span class="invisible">92604c-3cdd-4088-9691-e3ce2d6d577d</span></a></p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/audiobooks" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>audiobooks</span></a></span> <br><a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/fantasy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fantasy</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/amReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>amReading</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/RobertJacksonBennett" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RobertJacksonBennett</span></a> <br><a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/AudioBooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AudioBooks</span></a></p>

Elizabeth Tai | 戴秀铃 🇲🇾<p>This is a series of stories based on a famous real-life judge in China during the Song dynasty. It was written centuries ago, and one of the defining memories of my childhood is my dad giving me these very books to read. It has pictures but also Chinese and English writing. Rereading them and am amused by the fact that as a kid, I was reading about tortures, poisonings and how every story's "happy" ending ends with a decapitation of a bad guy. We Chinese kids have quite a morbid and grim diet for bedtime stories, looks like 😅</p><p>In that sense, I think we have something in common with the Germans 🤣</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/AmReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmReading</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Chinese" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Chinese</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/German" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>German</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Classics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Classics</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fiction</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a></p>

Hawksquill<p>Book 22 of 2025</p><p>The Translator by John Crowley</p><p>4 stars</p><p>It's truly impressive how deftly Crowley can move between genres and styles while still retaining his signature eloquence and emotional intelligence. I loved the themes of translation/transformation, coming of age, Cold War paranoia, and the sharply written dialogue. Also, I learned so much from the chapters that featured lost children in the USSR. </p><p>There was something missing for me, though, and I can't quite put my finger on it. Perhaps it's just because I've never found poetry as moving as prose. There were quite a few sections about technical poetry stuff like rhyme schemes, plus several full original poems included in the text. It would probably be much more compelling for a poetry lover. </p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/BookReview" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BookReview</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/Reading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Reading</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/AmReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmReading</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/HistoricalFiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HistoricalFiction</span></a></p>
Holly<p>Many years ago I read the Brother Cadfael book "A Morbid Taste for Bones" by Ellis Peters, fell in love with the character and bought all the books in the series. I read almost all of them but stopped because I didn't want to live in a world with no new Cadfael books. I noticed them on the bookshelf today. I'm older now and am thinking I would hate to die with unread Cadfael books in my house. <br><a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/amReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>amReading</span></a></p>
Charlotte Walker<p>Hello, I haven’t tooted much today as I had a busy work day and I was then engrossed in the book I’m reading, a SF novel about a human colony on a frozen planet descended from people who fled Earth 200 years earlier and believe themselves to be the last of their kind. But then an engineering vessel sent to build an intergalactic transmission unit appears in their planet’s orbit and they are forced to begin to question the stories they have been told since childhood.</p><p>Nice inclusive story with developing lesbian love (at least I hope so), poly relationships and a non-binary character. It’s called Arkhangelsk, which I find hard to pronounce, and it’s written by the wonderfully named Elizabeth H Bonesteel. I so want that to be her real name.</p><p><a href="https://beige.party/tags/AmReading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmReading</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a></p>
