"Houston, Tranquility Base here - the Eagle has landed..."

On this day, in 1969, two human beings walked on the surface of a world that was not our native Earth, for the first time in all the thousands of years of human history.

I count myself very fortunate that my work in the book trade has allowed me to shake hands and chat with an Apollo astronaut, that was a very special moment.

50 years ago #OTD at 16:09 UTC #Soyuz 19 and the final #Apollo spacecraft docked in orbit in the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project or Экспериментальный полёт «Союз»–«Аполлон» (the Americans and Soviets never agreed on which s/c comes first): nasa.gov/apollo-soyuz-test-pro = various NASA materials, historycollection.jsc.nasa.gov = many links, nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/20 = a biiiig book, facebook.com/AstroDrewMorgan/p and facebook.com/ralf.heckel1/post and facebook.com/groups/1760511591 and facebook.com/groups/4880062285 = more visuals, youtube.com/live/Mu7iEyaOmDM = an online event, arstechnica.com/space/2025/07/ and spacerockethistory.com/2025/02 and collectspace.com/news/news-071 and nytimes.com/2025/07/14/science = articles and scicomm.xyz/@Nick_Stevens_grap = a contemporary cartoon.

A Handshake in #Orbit 50 Years Ago Transformed the #SpaceRace
Some 140 miles above France, American astronauts opened a spacecraft hatch and found themselves face to face with cosmonauts from the #SovietUnion.
In the summer of #1975, seeing two men from rival nations greet each other in orbit across a bridge between their docked spacecraft was a powerful and unprecedented gesture witnessed by millions on the world spinning below.

Many Greek gods are linked to birds - Zeus's eagle, Hera's peacock, Athena's owl, Apollo's raven, etc. At one time ravens had white feathers, but when a raven delivered Apollo bad news, the sun god was so enraged that his heat charred the bird's feathers. Now all ravens are black.

One of the few films I've watched several times in the cinema.

"This year marks the 30th anniversary of the 1995 Oscar-winning film, Apollo 13, director Ron Howard's masterful love letter to NASA's Apollo program in general and the eponymous space mission in particular. So we're taking the opportunity to revisit this riveting homage to American science, ingenuity, and daring."

Thanks to a book recommendation by @bert_hubert [1], I went on a tangent learning more about the absolutely fascinating history and workings of core memory (and core rope memory, its read-only version). Some of this also very interesting for #PermaComputing and giving me ideas for future art projects...

Desde que estoy releyendo el manga “Space Brothers”, me ha vuelto el interés por el programa Apollo.

Estoy aprovechando para volver a escuchar este podcast de BBC World: “13 minutes to the Moon”. Son 12 episodios de menos de una hora llenos de entrevistas y datos de interés.

Una producción excelente narrada con un inglés muy claro (excepto algún entrevistado).

Disponible aquí y en todas las plataformas de podcasts (supongo):

Today I learned about the “boop” at the start and “beep” at the end of #Apollo era #NASA ground side communications. These are called #QuindarTones - a ground side PTT remote control signal for radio transmissions around the world. Two 250 millisecond sine wave pulses with 2525 Hz for the intro tone and 2475 Hz outro tone.

These were used a while after the Apollo programme as audio cues.

I think these could feature in making #BonkWave #MusicProduction
