Sunguramy :nb_lily:
:boost_ok: Re: iNaturalist getting involved with Google genAI...feeding our comments into things...

Due to continued silence from iNaturalist about everything, October 31. That’s my deadline. That’s MORE THAN FAIR amount of time for them to:

1) Have a proper outline of the project and exactly what it will be.
2. Have a solid opt-in to the project, so no users are auto opted in without their consent
3. Have added account deletion options from an over-year-old feature request to add ways to delete including without removing ID’s for others along with anonymization. If data loss is really such a problem to them (which I think it should be) not having a way to do such a type of delete should be TOP PRIORITY especially with all this genAI bs going on...already it sounds like some power users have fully deleted their accounts over this, tired of waiting.

- Signed, someone with almost 25k ID’s for others, and almost 4k observations, including some firsts on the site (including new species to science) and other rare reports.

Please boost because I don't think most users know what is going on. All this info is mostly occurring on their separate forum, which you need to make a separate account to join. Andy Baker
Ongoing Cave Climate Data Collection in Australia

Back in 2020, in the depths of COVID lockdowns here in Australia, the Australasian Cave and Karst Management Association organised a cave climate 'baseline monitoring' project. At that time, numerous tourist caves were closed to visitors. The opportunity was taken to record the cave climate. Data loggers were calibrated and shipped to the participating cave organisations. They regularly sent back cave temperature and relative humidity data....

http://andy-baker.org/2025/07/20/ongoing-cave-climate-data-collection-in-australia/

#caves #climate #ACKMA #communityscience #citizenscience

Sunguramy :nb_lily:
Well...I cannot say I am pleased about iNaturalist partnering with Google to develop GenAI. While what iNat would like to do would be incredibly helpful, it can be done by other means (namely, uh, volunteer or employed actual experts?). My main concerns are simple, and yet, unaddressed by the iNaturalist post about this project:
1) How can we be assured that our data that we share with iNaturalist will NOT be shared with Google; as if anything it seems to suggest free sharing between iNat and Google to develop things using Google's GenAI; thus Google does have access even if indirectly.
2) Will we have an opt-out option, so our data is not used in this project

In the end, nature is about community, not machines. And I do not consent to feeding any of my data into Google's GenAI for any purpose.

UPDATE: They updated their post ( https://www.inaturalist.org/posts/113184-inaturalist-receives-grant-to-improve-species-suggestions), and some of my worries are alleviated; namely, Google will not have access to our data from them and they are under no obligation to use Google's infrastructure. However, I still am dubious...for a few reasons which I won't elaborate here. There is a Q&A upcoming.

Photo is one that was used in a presentation, and one of the questions asked by a 60-something year old Doctor of Biology was "That photo is so good! Richard Littauer
I got tired of opening eBird for incidental birds I see from my window while I work on my laptop. So, I made an automatic logger for my command line, and added an Alfred extension so I could log in with a few keystrokes.

https://codeberg.org/RichardLitt/eBird-logger

You can also add comments and numbers, which is nice.

#ebird #code #alfred #osx #communityscience

a Nature’s Goth
Yesterday, I helped co-lead my first mushroom walk hosted by the Discovery Center in Philadelphia. It was cold and rainy, but we still had a decent turn out of 20-ish people? I haven't worked much with my co- before, but I'm thankful that it went well, and the host organizer was very easy to work with too. We walked along a path that I had had a chance to scope out a month earlier, which was really helpful as someone not as confident about leading trails. The practice run with her made me realize I might know more than I expected- at least enough for the purposes of the event. It was hard to find specimens in the cold, but not impossible, including wood ears and oysters. I think people who attended had a good time and got to come away with some good fungi fun facts like how it's safe to touch mushrooms or how to use iNaturalist. I'm really thankful for this opportunity.

#sporespondence #fungiverse #mushtodon #fungi #mushrooms #communityScience

Richard Littauer
If you are heavy iNaturalist user and good at plants, I could use some help identifying species from a couple of days when we visited QEII covenants in the South Island.
