Finnish folks, I have a question about #Finnish ...

I just came across the word "Kiitoksia"... how is it different compared to "Kiitos" and when would you use one over the other?

I think I hear Finnish ads when listening to podcasts via my self hosted audiobookshelf app.

My server is hosted via @hetzner in Finland, so it would make sense, and it's fun to hear another language and to try to understand the syntax of the ad text.

Is "Barkman" a thing from Finland in ads?

Being native to a very uncommon language, I tend to often come across 'translated' versions of bigger international web sites. The problem is that they obviously didn't put any effort before launching their so called Finnish site, which is obviously just poor machine translation of the original English site.

In a lot of cases the translation is so poor, it just leaves me wondering what it's trying to say, until I translate it word to work back to English and oh look, now it makes sense!

Okay but does Apple Translation support #Finnish yet?

#Etymology thought I had yesterday: is the #Finnish word #kota related to the English word #cottage? Apparently the latter comes from Old Norse if you go back far enough, and it wouldn’t be surprising to find Norse borrowed it through Saami, or vice versa.

I still maintain that the best way to learn a language is with a good textbook. Sure, it’s hard to find and go with your gut based on reviews… but Duolingo is just good for reinforcing and practicing what you’d normally learn from a book/teacher.

You didn’t need me to tell you this but it’s just a good reminder that good old fashioned study is always the way to go.
