It's sunday night before another work week. I'm spending the last few hours of the day playing around with the "Sound, Graphics & Aircraft Upgrade" for Microsoft's Flight Simulator 4.0. This definitely looks like a serious upgrade... FS4 in 800 x 600 SVGA. Astonishing!

Microsoft Works for Windows, v3.0b from late 1994, was the very last version of Works designed to run on Windows 3.1 before Windows 95 showed up and changed everything. And, up until today, I was never able to find a working, German language set of floppy disks for it. Oh, well. I just found it, installed it successfully... and it's glorious! Yes, I know I am a little weird. Have a nice day!

I'm late to the party, but I see Japan sold 3.5" floppy disks of MIDI music (SMF=Standard MIDI Files) from pop bands in the 90's. It also looks like they were sometimes sold in a CD jewel case but with a special insert to hold a floppy disk.
I couldn't find a 3D model for a floppy jewel case insert, so I remixed one. New model uploaded linked below.

Back with the 4040: as usual the drive is a dual CPU system. The second CPU is a regular 6502. One processor handles the IEEE488 bus and DOS routines, while the other is dealing with the GCR encoding and talking to the drive mechanisms.
On the 1541 this is all reduced to one CPU.

Soo… I have gotten another CBM dual drive floppy disk. A model 4040, which uses regular 48tpi single sided drive mechanisms. It was sold to me as defective. The owner bought it used 40 years ago. And after a long time in storage that device was not reading disks anymore. Let us start the process of reviving this beauty, ok?

This is fascinating, the Computer Devices' DOT, the a portable that was the first computer to ship with Sony 3.5-inch disk drives and it had a *widescreen* CRT display (which supported 132x25 textmode!).
And the video ... has some surprises...

Digitalisiert hatte ich sie ja schon vor einer Weile, aber jetzt hatte ich nochmal das Glück, beide Bücher in schöner Qualität für meine physische Sammlung zu bekommen. Mich ärgert zwar immernoch, dass ich meine Originalfassung aus 1993 irgendwann verloren hab, aber jetzt hab ich endlich einen würdigen Ersatz im Regal!
