@Ruth_Mottram Hope you had a good trip - I'm currently in Finland, got here with train to Stockholm, 11h ferry (but with fantastic skærgård views) to Åbo, then train journeys in #Finland. When planning I had hoped to avoid planes, but I either had to reverse my whole route, or include the three baltic countries and get another ferry from Kleipeda - it became too much so ended up with plane ticket Helsinki-Copenhagen. But otherwise nice feeling getting so far away without flying. Other than environmental benefits it feels more real to travel this way, last evening I saw a 'distance to cities signpost' with Esbjerg 1880 km, that's a long way...

Tip for #FlyingLess as a family: prepare for long train rides with board + card games. The #privacy friendly app games by @SECUSO_Research are absolutely brilliant, easy to use, stable + not stealing your data (or trying to sell your kids stuff).

(Edited to give right masto account: top work, thanks Secuso🙏 for the hours of fun your sudoku app has provided already).

Let’s jump into it!

Rather good BBC1 programme on the impact of flying, cheap flights in the UK, and the illusion of SAFs, offsets and so on. Justin Rowlatt and Fran Scott present. Dieter Helm lays down the truth about offsets and markets. And a series of liars spin yarns. Some look remarkably unconvinced by their own bullshit. #flyingless bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001

BBC iPlayerWhat They Really Mean for You - Cheap FlightsExploring controversial plans to change how we fly. Cheap flights have transformed our holidays, but can new technology reduce our environmental impact without prices increasing?

It’s taken me a bit longer to get into tooting so here is an #introduction long overdue.

New to mastodon, started on .social, but ended up here, new social media home! Quit twitter, miss the connections, hope to find new ones here.

I’m a researcher and designer, doing work in #sustainability, #HCI, #design, #lowcarbon everything, #flyingless, #artofhosting and many more things. #Undisciplinary. Very interested in #zines.

Will prob toot about work, #cycling, occasional bad ideas

We have tried to cut back on flying. This was our last trip to see the in laws before they permanently move closer to us next year and I really hope we can stick to our every other year plans for getting on a plane barring family emergencies.

WestJet wanted to know if I would recommend them for travel and this is my response.

@CarbonBubble On BBCWS Weekend, this question was discussed briefly opening with a scientist pointing to the clear link. The rest fo the discussion degeneratee into the question of "would more turbulence and wearing a seatbelt put you off flying" to which the answer was a very firm "No". The disconnect was breathtaking.
For context, one of the commentators was in South Africa. London-Jo'burg return is 2 tonnes CO2e. Average per capita emissions for the UK 6 tCO2e…#flyingless
