A short video recap of ISMB/ECCB 2025, covering the current trends and latest surprises in bioinformatics.

@rupdecat based on the talks and posters at #ISMBECCB2025 recently, there are plenty of Computational Biology folk at the very optimistic end of the spectrum ~ and beyond? I am rather skeptical outside controlled niche applications
Slides for my #BOSC2025 / BOKR keynote at #ISMBECCB2025 keynote (Open Knowledge Bases in the Age of Generative AI) here:
My #BOSC2025 / #ISMBECCB2025 slides on #F1000 now have a DOI: https://doi.org/10.7490/f1000research.1120241.1🚀
Wrapped up my trip to #Liverpool for #ISMBECCB2025 & #BOSC2025 with a Beetles cover band in the (reconstructed) Cavern Club
Or dear - ISCB team Seth's computer has died, which will hopefully just delay the #ISMBECCB2025 keynote videos going online.
@marcrr @pjacock …or this one, with beautiful original illustrations! #ISMBECCB2025
Now we have the #ISMBECCB2025 closing keynote: Fabian Theis "Decoding cellular systems: From observational atlases to generative interventions" https://www.iscb.org/ismbeccb2025/programme-agenda/distinguished-keynotes#theis - some slick videos. I guess they have practiced the talk to timed slide auto-advancement - doing it well!
[Update: No, using a discrete slide-clicker]
Wow - David Baker saying at #ISMBECCB2025 that this keynote is a video call as he has a no-travel policy. He spends most of his time at work talking to people. "Collaborations are what makes science fun."
#ismbeccb2025 opened and is closing with recognition of data quality, #Biocuration and databases.
Glad to hear David Baker mention many applications of protein design not only in medical research but also important applications to plant biology, climate change, or degrading plastics. #ismbeccb2025
Huh, looks like a change of schedule that I missed: the closing #ISMBECCB2025 keynote is from David Baker https://www.iscb.org/ismbeccb2025/programme-agenda/distinguished-keynotes#baker - being done by video call in a chat format with Christine Orengo (former ISCB president etc)
Update: We get David & then Fabian Theis - I found the webpage slightly confusing with both listed for 16:20 to 18:00
Finally got to see the back of the Liverpool ACC auditorium spun round at it is reconfigured for max capacity - time for the #ISMBECCB2025 closing keynote!
That’s an end to the formal #BOSC2025 / #ISMBECCB2025 #CoFest - thanks all!
A quick poll in the room suggests there is more interest in doing this next time in the evenings after the tracks, rather than during the day clashing with some of the tracks, or after the formal conference.

@marcrr Ah! Yes, I should have - I was so grabbed by their scarecrow that I started reading it without snapping a photo

Very clear presentation of @dessimoz about the value of democratising data & #FAIR #ismbeccb2025
@dessimoz Data should be reusable by non specialists. “The ultimate non specialist: AI” #ismbeccb2025
@dessimoz The missing link in FAIR data policy: data resources #ismbeccb2025
