I’m kinda digging the future-retro look of LOFREE products.

Noticed my daughters start the car differently than I do. Likely based on their own UX histories.
When you use a car with a push start button, do you?

A rusted valve at the water’s edge — aged metal, faded paint, and quiet form. Sometimes beauty hides in the everyday.
Follow for more industrial details and share if texture tells a story to you too.
Happy 93rd birthday to industrial designer Dieter Rams. He's most often associated with the consumer products brand Braun, introducing sustainable design, and his list of Ten Principles of Good Design.
"Indifference towards people and the reality in which they live is actually the one and only cardinal sin in design."
– Dieter Rams
You can watch a documentary about Rams on the website of independent filmmaker Gary Hustwit.
Some really smart industrial designer somewhere, somewhen:
I'm going to design a really novel ballpoint pen mechanism where you click on the button to engage the pen, but then click on the pen clip to release it. We'll make millions!!!
Me:
Great, now I have to think about how I hold your precious pen. lol

P.S., just realized that this is totally an analogy for modern UI Design, particularly "Client Side Decorations" (titlebar colonization by cruft, lol) and the horrid shoestring scrollbars that are so popular now.
One design worked PERFECTLY for fifty years, and some young person had to come along and "innovate" it without considering how it would affect the users.
Every. Dang. Time, people!
@cdarwin I saw an ad on YouTube yesterday for this truck and was intrigued enough to search on it. I love the design philosophy in play here (lightweight, cheap, simple, user customizable) and I sure hope it signals a trend in #industrialDesign

On my way to kick-off our #Philosophy and #Sociology course at the #IndustrialDesign BA programme at #Utwente. Who would have thought that you can study Industrial Design and get lectures about “why we should stop designing” at the same time? #PhilTech #STS #HigherEd

Just seen this today (thanks to @brucknerite):
Commercially Available Chairs in Star Trek https://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/database/chairs-trek.htm
"Countless off-the-shelf office chairs, lounge chairs or car seats appeared in Star Trek productions. Here is a list of the models that we found, among them many design classics. Currently identified: 180."
I just watched a video of Enzo Mari trying to eat with chopsticks. He didn't appear understand the concept of holding one stick rigid while levering with the other, he did not glance at others in order to mimic their behaviour and he didn’t appear to ask for help. What does this tell us, if anything? #design #industrialdesign #problemsolving
