There is a picture of George Green, the mathematician from Nottingham, doing the rounds on the internet. Alas, this is not the right George Green. Details:

Colin visited a #museum & described it as "unusual in that its science centre doesn’t hide the maths away".
It's a shame that I can't refute that claim.
Every museum (and gallery, etc) has mathematical themes in it, but... how many recognise this? Does yours?
Here's a real context #geometry question on area & volume.
Home Depot changed the size of their heavy duty small box from last year to this year.
What has been gained/lost? Why do you think so?
Old box: 11" x 17" x 11"
New box: 12" x 10" x 16"

Good morning #museums, #galleries & #heritage sites of the UK!
Your challenge for today is to search for "maths week [country you're based in]", put the dates in your calendar & start thinking about how you can get involved!
(If you're already planning something, tell me about it!)
#MathsToday
Maths Week England 2025 is 15th - 23rd November!
If you're a #maths teacher, sign up to access resources & find out about events!
If you represent a #museum, consider providing an event or resource (just like so many do for Maths Week Scotland!)
Maths is not just for schools!
#30DaysWild Day 20: Building a birdhouse together is great activity to practice your knowledge of angles, shapes and measuring.
All activity descriptions + free downloadable resources on our website www.mathsweek.scot/n...

It turns out that the Festival of Quilts is an undercover* #maths conference.
*undercover. UnderCOVER. COVER. QUILT. You get it.

I wandered around the (London) National Gallery yesterday, for the first time in *years*.
#Art, particularly in the form of big old paintings, is not something that lies within my comfort zone, but I feel that allowing myself to experience feelings that such a site inspires in me is important not least because it provides some insight into how some people feel when participating in a 'maths' thing, when #maths is outside their comfort zone: there are many parallels between the feelings inspired by big, posh art galleries, and those inspired by maths activities!
I find it interesting to search #museum and #gallery websites for "mathematics". In the Nat. Gallery's case there are some pretty interesting results that are worth a browse:

Tomorrow evening (Tuesday 17th) is #MathsJam in many places, including #MiltonKeynes!
Find your local MJ (↓), or join us at #MK All Bar One (near the Hub) from 7pm.
Free to attend & totally informal: all you need is to like the sound of socialising with fellow #maths fans!

This afternoon we made the pattern on a Lego board and he picked some rules. We used red/pink bricks for alive cells. We made a few iterations until we ran out of time.
When was the last time we talked about cellular automata? Months, maybe a year. Anyway, as we came out of a shop earlier, my son said “would the Game of Life be different if it was played on rectangles?” It turns out he was thinking about the floor we were on. So this afternoon… (next post)
