They shipped our mini pc replacement and it has a new Mint installation and Vivaldi browser. I love the compact design and I can easily move it from monitor to screen. Be careful it does not get flung out of its bay after tangling on some cables. #minipc #LinuxMint

J'ai reçu mon minipc qui servira de serveur! Si seulement j'arrive à le paramétrer. La marque a ajouté une surcouche "Smart Recovery" quand j'essaie d'accéder au BIOS. Ca me propose uniquement de booter sur Windows ou de restaurer les paramètres d'usine. J'ai pas encore trouvé comment l'éviter et pouvoir booter sur ma clé USB. Si quelqu'un·e a une idée...

I went all out on a #selfhosting setup (again). I decided to host a few (more) things that I had wanted for some time. This instance is one of them.

Over the years, I've used a #Synology #NAS (awful, very limited software). Then I built a #diyNAS with a Celeron CPU and Mini-ITX board, but it was a bit too big for my nomadic lifestyle, so I sold it for parts before my second move.

I was stuck with an #Asustor NAS for some time, which was good for storage. Especially since it was easy to run on a custom OS — #OpenMediaVault, in my case. But it wasn't powerful enough to run everything I wanted. And that's not including things like #GoToSocial. Admittedly, I'm also running surveillance software.

I've eventually settled on an AMD #Ryzen #miniPC with NVMe and SATA storage. The SATA disk is limited to a height of 7 mm, which also limits it to 2 TB. The NVMe is also limited to 2TB, because of the price =)

Additionally, I have a USB 3.0 external hard drive for 'cold storage'. It's also 2TB. So, with 6TB of #storage, I have more than enough for my self-hosting needs. This includes my current media library, although it may become a bottleneck in the near future as I'm leaving #Spotify.

The purpose of this instance is to post about #selfhosted software and, on occasion, a little about #softwaredevelopment (though I always struggle to find something to write about on this subject, probably because it is my job) without being constrained to 500 characters on #Mastodon or running a full-featured Mastodon instance.

From my perspective, you cannot offer something worse at $599 when the Mac Mini M4 exists, let alone $1,000 when RTX 4060 laptops exist.

Plus, at this point NVIDIA and Apple for #AI are not negotiable. You either have it or you don't.

Update II on my Plan of Execution

I've had only one system which was up to specs to do the brunt of the work. I've finally also gotten a computer which has EFI.

It's also older since it has no USB-C however the machine was gifted to me, for which I'm thankful. I need the USB-C though, since important peripherals of mine use that.

It has proper cooling, as you've read in current posts and I've now also got a Raspberri Pi5 so I can play with electronic projects. Its got Debian Linux on it, and I'm typing this toot on the machine, using a fresh 128GB microSD card.
The USB-C port on the SBC seems to be only for power,, since using it as a power pass through does not activate my UCB-C multi function device.
