I tried to find some documentary on Ancient Egypt for The Kid yesterday

- #youtube is full of slop, aliens and conspiracy. Useless.
- #netflix has some docs but it’s a race to find a pyramid. Terrible.

Similarly #amazon #showtime #disney.

As a result of downloaded a doc from late 00s which was the best I could find. Seems smart tv is another body in streaming’s closet.

Ballerina (2023)

No, not *that* Ballerina from the John Wick universe.

This is a mostly standard-fare action movie that deals with abuse and revenge. It is a mere 93 minutes and is mostly efficient with that time. An ex-bodyguard, Ok-joo (un Jong-seo) scorches the Earth to avenge the death of her ballerina best friend. That really is the plot of this film and it's great. This isn't an overstuffed action film, it is a lot like the first John Wick film that also is around 90 minutes long. The protagonist has something taken away, then seeks revenge at all cost.

It is a little slow to get started, but once it gets going it is an exceedingly gory action movie (good thing). Unfortunately, the action scenes other than the finale action scene are so badly shot with whip pans that I could not see what was happening. The finale action sequence was glorious and worth the journey to get there.

The movie itself is beautiful. It is slick, colorful and has its moments where it presents art in motion.

There are subtle moments of humor that are weaved throughout the film. It is subtle enough to not be a distraction. I like the old couple that shows up in the balloon party van.

Jun Jong-seo is fantastic as the protagonist on a warpath to avenge her friend. Kim Ji-hoon dives right into his role and so hateable.

If you're an action film fan, Ballerina is worth a watch.

Rated 7 out of 10.

Streamed on Netflix.

What the flying f... is wrong with #streaming video platforms these days? #Netflix and #HBO and #Disney and whoever the f... else - zero of them manage to get #audio synchronised to the #video. Doesn't matter which device: #LG TV with #Marantz receiver, #eARC or direct audio, bitstream or PCM, #iPad or #iPhone, app or browser - audio is *always* out of sync.

I have tested a gazillion combinations and re-arranged my home cinema setup several times in futile attempts to fix this. To absolutely no avail.

Seeing it happen consistently even on an iPad Pro with native apps is somehow comforting - this isn't my fault. It's the providers.

And PLEASE don't suggest I adjust lip sync on my amp or Apple TV or whatever:
- audio is BEHIND the video in half the cases
- it varies between titles and apps (and why should I have to adjust every time?!?)
- in many cases no adjustment is even possible
- sometimes it's >500ms!!

I am flabbergasted that in 2025 this is a problem and consumers aren't ripping ALL of these platforms a new one. I mean what the ducking duck.

I like the animated series #Pantheon and there's a 2nd season now. Its design is simple (kinda like Invincible's) but it seems to have been made by people who care about getting details of cyber technology right. There are these nice references to stuff that the audience might appreciate like this NERD sticker on a laptop that looks like the logo of NERV (the central organisation from the cult anime Neon Genesis Evangelion)

Hoy me he visto “It’s what’s inside” (“Lo que hay dentro” en castellano).
