Or don't buy a new Android phone.
And don't use an app owned by Meta.

My android still has Google Assistant (with all the stuffs turned off). I can "switch from Google Assistant to Gemini" if I want to but it's not done by default. I assume the new phones come with Gemini baked in.

I suppose the other option is to use Signal for messaging & calls.

UGH. Is there even a way to disable all Gemini access on a Pixel? This is not good at all.

Summary from @cazabon

"I learned something today: Google's Gemini "AI" on phones accesses your data from "Phones, Messages, WhatsApp" and other stuff whether you have Gemini turned on or not. It just keeps the data longer if you turn it on. Oh, and lets it be reviewed by humans (!) for Google's advantage in training "AI" etc.

But this only came to my attention because of an upcoming change: it's going to start keeping your data long-term even if you turn it "off": "#Gemini will soon be able to help you use Phone, #Messages, #WhatsApp, and Utilities on your phone, whether your Gemini Apps Activity is on or off."

This is, of course, a #privacy and #security #nightmare.

If this is baked into Android, and therefore not removable, I'd have to say I'd recommend against using Android at all starting July 7th."

Watching some of a Jane Austen biography on BBC4 and really feeling for her when her parents abruptly moved the whole family from a charming rural home to the city of Bath, at that time a 'social whirl' of the shallow and feckless. She stopped writing.

The equivalent of me being sent off on a ship full only with 'influencers' of YouTube, Facebook and TikTok, and the 'stars' of every ghastly reality TV show created...

I would have to take 'the gentleman's way out' 😂

Had a nightmare last night. I had to pack up a house with two other people in a house that was built on a grveyard. So we had to watch for ghouls and bones as we packed. It was hectic and everything got packed into the kitchen - as it ws all being carted out the nightmarre ends with all of us saying “good job”. There was so much spaghetti! So weird. #nightmare #dream

Echoes from the Deep / Echi dal Profondo for #spookysaturday episode 10

"How many times do I have to do this?", you wonder. This is a futile mission. There's nobody but us. You've spent years studying, training, waiting to get out there into space. To explore new frontiers, see distant lands, discover if we are really alone, and instead you've ended up in this cramped room pinging out messages every day.
The message is always the same: "This is Terra. Is anyone out there?" And the answer is always the same - silence.
You type it out again. What is this now – the 6th or 7th year? Oh, it doesn't matter. Send.
The screen turns blank. Quelle surprise. Lather, rinse, repeat. Time to go to lunch. You start putting on your jacket when you hear the ping. The computer lights up.
"ENOUGH" fills the screen.
You try to triangulate the message – one of your coworkers has obviously decided to be a smartass today. A welcome break from the monotony. but unfortunately for them, all activity must be reported.
The signal isn't coming from in here or out there. It's coming from underground. Deep underground. Way way too deep underground.

(That's another reason to say no to fracking kids!!

I had a #nightmare #dream recently as well.

I dreamed of walking through the forest. The road was similar to the one near Okonek, where I walked last winter and that was filled with frozen ponds. Except this time it actually was cut off by a huge pond — probably a shallow one, but the size of small lake. I could hear more water running.

Where the road submerged into the water, there was a mattress lying on the ground — the kind you'd find on an old deckchair. For some reason I've laid down on it, perhaps I was trying to get a better angle for the photo, or it was just my sleep talking. And suddenly, the mattress started floating away.

Absurdly, I had hoped it wouldn't sink but instead carry me to the other shore, saving me from having to walk around it. However, eventually it did start to sink slowly, and I started worrying that I'm going to drown now — still lying down, not even considering the possibility of standing up. Just prior to waking up, it occurred to me that my bag and everything in it is getting soaked.

I had a #nightmare that I was back at #school, was doing great and then it turned out I haven't been reading books. Not a single one, while everyone was reading them, just nobody was talking about it so I forgot. Then it turned out I forgot to go to many other lessons because I'm an adult and I usually don't do that, but it's now too late to catch up and I have like a week to learn everything and read all the books. Terrifying.

The Graveyard Shift / Il Turno di Notte for #spookysaturday episode 8

Night guard at a rural cemetery wasn't exactly the job you were looking for, but these past six months have actually been great. Nice and quiet, nobody to bother you, decent pay!
Tonight's the same routine as ever: check all the gates are locked, quick sweep along the outer walls, note any signs of damage, walk your regular routes and watch out for anybody who shouldn't be there. Same old same old, but you don't mind, you like the familiarity.
Oh, someone’s left the lights on in the crypts again. Better turn them off. As you get closer, you hear sounds - muffled voices and footsteps. Great. They’d warned you about teenagers sneaking in for a dare. Heading down the stairs, you call out "Okay, fun's over. Time to go home".
No answer. You walk down one of the corridors. You can hear footsteps and voices ahead of you, so you speed up and turn the corner quickly. Nothing. Damn, these guys are fast.
"You're not in trouble. You just can't be in here now".
More mumbling and shuffling. You turn corner after corner for – what? – 20 minutes? Has the crypt always been this big? You decide if you leave the door open, they'll eventually go home. You try to retrace your steps, peering down corridors – you don't remember it looking like this before. Did you take a right or a left here? Don’t remember this dead end…
You realize that the voices and footsteps have stopped. There’s now complete silence. Then the lights go out. Pitch black. You start feeling your way along the walls.
The voices are back, but they’re no longer muffled.
"It's our turn to chase you."
And the footsteps are clearer too. And faster. Much faster.

The review of this component was also what led us to the discovery of the deepin-feature-enable whitelisting bypass, since we installed the full Deepin desktop environment for the first time in a long time, which triggered the “license agreement” dialog described above. After finding out about this, we decided that it was time to reassess the overall topic of Deepin in openSUSE based on our long-standing experiences.

2024-08-29: deepin-api-proxy: D-Bus Service

After a longer time of standstill regarding Deepin reviews, a request for the addition of deepin-api-proxy arrived. This package greeted us with over two dozen D-Bus configuration files. Again, upstream’s description of what the component is supposed to do was very terse. From looking at the implementation we deduced that the proxy component seems to be related to the renaming of interfaces described in the previous section.

We found a design flaw in the proxy’s design which allowed a local root exploit. You can find the details in a dedicated blog post we published about this not too long ago.

It is noteworthy that the communication with upstream proved very difficult during the coordinated disclosure process we started for this finding. We did not get timely responses, which nearly led us to a one-sided publication of the report, until upstream finally expressed their wish to follow coordinated disclosure at the very last moment.
