I was at hospital getting IV antibiotics yesterday for several hours. I got an infection from my gums bleeding out & it spread quickly. I needed strong antibiotics IV treatment; the amoxicillin pills weren't effective enough.
I had to take today & tomorrow off work to recover - unable to talk ATM. I'll be updating more this afternoon, with some new photos & my dentures fundraiser - 2 small donations came in since last update 🙏
My morning tasks today -> Call some clients, talk to my substitute workers to confirm all schedules/client notes were received & organize family prescription pickups with a friend who is helping me out with personal errands on her day off.

Early morning, I made some Chả Cua Trứng Hấp - #Vietnamese Egg & Crab meatloaf. I can't have any of it until tonight or tomorrow - when my mouth isn't in as much pain.

I only use real crab meat & consider it sacrilege to use fake crab meat because the flavours are not the same at all. Fake crab meat doesn't even taste anything like real crab. Even canned real crab meat is better than that plastic looking & gross tasting fake crab meat. I wouldn't bother making this dish if you can't get real crab meat.

I'm now with my 3rd client of the day. He's also from Saigon, Vietnam but from a different district than where my Dad's family lived/worked before we were bombed 3 times in Cholon (District 5). He's from District 8 & fled from Vietnam via escaping through river canals into Laos & then into Thailand. His family fled during the last China-Vietnam war in 1979.
We're talking about missing our birthplaces. Missing our family still stuck overseas. Missing all of our foods & cultures too. The diaspora life is far from the lives our families had before displacements from wars.

It is really nice to chat with this client because of our similar shared backgrounds.

In my street portraits in Vietnam, I wanted to pay tribute to "modern street photography", this photographic culture born in the USA and nourished by modern and committed street photographs from 1935 to 1965. By setting up a black canvas, I wanted to add a new intention to the heart of a lively street in a small Vietnamese town.
The idea of ​​setting up an outdoor photo studio in the streets of this mountain community offered me a unique opportunity to document and celebrate the ethnic diversity of Vietnam. Women, men, old people, artisans, simple passers-by agreed to come and share a moment with this funny European photographer and his lens. A background, an optic, a light source and the authenticity of the subtle art of portraiture. Of the encounter. Of the other.
I loved that these people, from diverse and varied ethnicities, were proud and curious to share their heritage, and that they willingly took part in this photographic experience. Together, we tried to create a photographic initiative that transcends art by having a significant social impact. The art of the street photographer is not so much to be, during a brief moment of eternity, the master of time and space, it is above all to highlight often unknown stories that promote intercultural understanding. Portraits become visual ambassadors of diversity and inclusivity.
