New tests show Microsoft Recall still screenshots passwords, banking info & SSNs—even with filters enabled 🛑
Recall was re-released with "enhanced security," but researchers found inconsistent protections & remote access risks 🔓

Despite concerns, Microsoft continues to promote it as a core Copilot+ feature 🤖

#Windows11 actually fixes something that used to drive me crazy in Windows 10:

for some reason when my monitors go to sleep and come back on again, Windows 10 always thought that my main monitor no longer existed and moved all windows from it onto my right monitor instead. and then of course my main monitor would come online again with no windows on it, because they’ve all been shifted to the right for no good reason

Windows 11 actually handles this case really well because as soon as my main monitor comes online, it recognizes that and shifts my windows back to it again

My university #IT staff are re-imaging our #computers with #Windows11 (not upgrading, re-imaging). We have to make sure our files are backed up before they take the computer. Which I did. Except I have two hard drives--an SSD with Windows 10 installed and a HDD for backups and extra storage. I didn't think about the HDD. Not until the IT guy brought the computer back, booted it up, and said...of, did you have two drives? He had pulled the SSD and wiped the HDD with the Windows 11 re-image. WTF?

The reason behind H1 and H2 release names for Windows 10/11 updates

When Windows 10 was unveiled to us on July 2015, new biannual updates were titled with the season names. This was an older form of titling the biannual Windows updates that used to be released each half of the year. The plan went like this:

  • Windows 10 updates that were released in the first half of the year would have the “Spring” update.
  • Windows 10 updates that were released in the second half of the year would have the “Fall” update.

For example, a Windows 10 update that was released in the second half of 2017 (October 17th) was called the 2017 Fall Creators Update. In the contrary, an update that was released on April 27th, 2018, was called the 2018 Spring Update.

Microsoft, through the Old New Thing blog hosted by Raymond Chen, has finally explained why they had switched version naming from the old system that relied on season names to the new system that used the H notation that indicates the year half (H1 for the first half and H2 for the second half). Apparently, the old system had a bias to those who are living in the northern hemisphere.

Tip: While the northern hemisphere has the warmest months of June, July, and August with seasonal lag, the southern hemisphere has the warmest months of December, January, and February. As a result, the fall season in the northern hemisphere is the spring season in the southern hemisphere.

During an internal meeting, a senior executive asked if the organization had any biases, and a colleague that was born in the southern hemisphere raised his hand. The colleague stated that the naming scheme that Microsoft used to rely on was biased to those living in the northern hemisphere, and, thus, not inclusive to those living in the southern hemisphere.

As a response to this conference, newer updates were named after the year half indicator, such as 20H2, 21H1, 21H2, and 22H2. This naming scheme was then moved to Windows 11, and the upcoming update will have the version of 25H2.

This is a reminder that we need to be inclusive when naming the releases or the updates.

If you value the #privacy and #security of your personal #data you must not use #Microsoft #Recall. If that means switching to #Linux then so be it.

But
#Windows11 now is a privacy nightmare, and it's not like Microsoft hasn't been #hacked before. Now that they've chosen to process all image data on their servers (instead of your computer) this just makes them that much more of a target.

Not only for
#criminals, but also for #LawEnforcement.

And you don't have to be doing anything wrong to be caught up in a law enforcement investigation!

And under the current regime in
#Washington, anyone who isn't a #Trump supporter is a potential #Enemy of The State. Do you really want to run the risk of your personal emails and documents ending up in the hands of #PamBondi?

Windows 11 is so amazing.
User reports that suddenly items in the start popup don't respond when being clicked. Also adding comments to JIRA tickets don't work.

10 minutes later, with no changes at all, everything works again.
