Randulo.com<p>The last empress of France, Eugénie de Montijo:<br>She ruled France when her husband could not. She made huge societal changes: schools for girls, hospitals, the fashion industry that became "Haute couture" creating jobs for thousands, and this at a time when women were 2nd class citizens at best. Her story is fascinating, told by my wife and Petie Kladstrup of "Wine &amp; War" fame.<br> <br><a href="https://www.harpercollins.com/products/the-last-empress-of-france-petie-kladstrupevelyne-resnick" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">harpercollins.com/products/the</span><span class="invisible">-last-empress-of-france-petie-kladstrupevelyne-resnick</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/women" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>women</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/france" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>france</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/19thCentury" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>19thCentury</span></a></p>

Listening to #Pimsleur language lessons in audiobook from the library to refresh my high school and college French. I'm more than a little skeeved out by lesson 9 having a man keep trying to ask a woman out after she has told him no and also that she's married. She keeps having to say no with greater emphasis. Possibly useful but also ick. You shouldn't have to get all the way to "absolument pas."

**What did the Vikings really think about pregnant women?**

"_Archaeologist Marianne Hem Eriksen has been searching for traces of pregnant women in the Viking Age. The fact that she found almost none tells its own story._"
