As tears gather in her eyelashes, the day angel wraps her upper body in her wings to hide as she talks:] My friend calls it anger management; 'parently I keep on inflicting "life lessons" on myself. As a dumb, stupid, ignorant fledgling, I didn't calm down; I acted out. Rarely listened, got myself into fun trouble that was still trouble all the same, flew with hunky guys who were no good, and generally made my family regret I'd been born. Haven't tried to contact 'em since I threw that brick through the Hauler Guild's window 'fer rejected me, and rolled that pretty van down a hill. Ya could say I got to the point of calming down by breaking things and people's trust in me.

Running from the law has the effect of ya losing the privilege to be protected by that same law. I… [coughs] Okay, bad things happened and I lost control of my life, including the bein' able to fight being controlled. Not a child no more. How did I calm down?

Turned it inward.

My friend calls it "apathy." A-pathy: means "not feelin'." Got to the point where I ceased remembering my life, worked through criminal things I had no choice but to do, and, well, felt so very little I'd've been happy ta have suddenly died. I lived to 27 years surprisingly fast feelin' surprisingly numb, most days (surprisingly) blacked out from memory.

Friends changed that. They pointed out the good things I also did, and helped me find new dreams beyond my restrictions. Now, surprisingly often, I find that I cry. Dilman Dila
The life of a writer! Here I go, very excited, to submit my novel to a publisher that is accepting unagented submissions, and I start to type the email. Then something whispers, check if you already submitted, and I check, and yes, I sent this same novel, to this very publisher, in 2019. The book has gone through a substantive re-write since then, but well, still the same book, same story, and there was a personal note on the rejection. It used to be that you had to get a plug-in to do this, but now it's built right into the app. I even added metadata and some random image as a cover, just to see what would happen, and it worked perfectly.

I cannot figure out why more #writers don't use LibreOffice. Every single time I go to do something in it that I want to do for writing either fiction or nonfiction, it's way ahead of what you can do in Microsoft Word, and definitely way ahead of what you can do in Google Docs. Yeah you have to learn the app, but it's not like that's too difficult for what most writers need to get going.

Okay, having reread this prompt, I realized I attended an SF and Fantasy convention (BayCon / WesterCon 41) over the July 4th weekend. Do I like promoting my work? Again, I repeat, GAH! I am a shy person and the amount of mental energy necessary to roll that boulder up the hill and over the crest is Sisyphusian.

But.

I did it!!!

Strangely, turns out, as a number of you writer-author folk pointed out in your replies to me (thank you!), other writers, authors, artists, readers, and fans are or have been in situations that have made them supremely anxious, too. I was surprised at how many people asked questions or led me into conversations. I talked a lot that weekend, and asked questions that let me listen to also sorts of wonderful things about craft of writing, and living that life. My palms did not betray me and remained dry when I shook hands. I did talk about my view on gender and feminist fiction, and my works, and shared about Mastodon. I even ended up pitching a small press about Mars Needed Women (not actually realizing that I was) and got instructions how to submit even though they are not accepting submissions until next year. I'm hoping the beta readers give me enough feedback that I can make it acceptable before open submission time…

Wow. Okay, I won't say I was comfortable. It was work, and I burnt out for an hour here and there, but not in front of anybody I wanted to talk to. I. Did. Not. Blather, either. It was gratifying. I should work on having a higher opinion of myself and a kinder opinion of others.

[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]

#BoostingIsSharing

#gender #fiction #writer #author
#writing #writingcommunity #writersOfMastodon #writers
#RSdiscussion #RSMarsNeededWomen #RSStory
