Another interesting thing I read from the Edmonton Social Planning Council fACT Sheet on Child Benefits in Alberta and Canada is this:

"In addition, the distribution of child benefits for both provincial and federal programs to those who qualify is contingent upon filing a tax return. An average of 12% of adult Canadians do not file tax returns (15.3% for Albertans). A large portion of those who do not file are among the most vulnerable populations, with estimates showing that roughly one-third of social assistance recipients do not file taxes. As many as 40% of eligible First Nations families do not receive the CCB. This lag in distribution undermines the intended poverty reduction goals of these programs."

This ties in directly to my previous post on the use of Photo Identification for Voter Suppression, particularly in Alberta where we are now being asked to register online before tomorrow (August 15th) to vote in the October 20th municipal elections, using only your Alberta Driver's License or Alberta Photo ID card: beige.party/@ned/1150081213594

Because it is estimated that 15% of Americans do not have photo ID, similar to the 15% of Albertans who do not file taxes, and these represent similarly vulnerable demographics. The target of the cruelty is intentional. The target of the suppression is intentional.

From the wiki on "Voter Suppression":

Identification

Photo identification requirements to vote can disenfranchise many voters especially the young, elderly, lower-income people, recently transitioned individuals, people of color, recently married women and people with disabilities. Additionally, the implementation of signature-matching processes, especially for mail-in ballots, can also be done so strictly as to suppress orders of magnitude more votes than the actual fraud that it prevents. The Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement at The University of Maryland estimates that 15% of adult American either lack driver's licenses or state IDs or have IDs that may not meet strict photo ID voting law requirements. A solution implemented in a number of countries is to automatically send free ID cards to all its citizens.

This is the struggling demographic of people who vote against anti-democratic authoritarianism. And in other news, you must register to vote in Alberta municipal elections (held on Oct 20th) online by Aug 15th with your Alberta Driver's License or Alberta Photo ID card. #abpoli #cdnpoli #fascism #yeg #yyc

"Child benefits have been demonstrated to be an important tool for alleviating and reducing child poverty. A report from UNICEF highlighted that in 15 high-income countries, delivering universal child benefits alone led to a five percentage point reduction in child poverty on average."

- From the Edmonton Social Planning Council fACT Sheet on Child Benefits in Alberta and Canada

We saw a huge decline in child poverty in Alberta after Notley and Trudeau introduced the Alberta Child Benefit and Canada Child Benefit respectively (both revamped from former, less effective programs), which continued to decline in 2020 due to Federal pandemic supports, but immediately after skyrocketed again over the next few years. Now the newest Alberta Child Poverty Report shows that 1 in 5 children in Alberta lives in poverty. :(

The report concludes that:
The recent history of government benefits has proven that governments can significantly reduce poverty when they invest in the social safety net, yet these lessons have not been being fully realized. CERB in particular represents one of the largest missed learning opportunities. Governments could have used COVID-19 benefits as a framework to make long-term improvements to the social safety net, through measures such as increasing benefit amounts, widening eligibility criteria, and reducing punitive claw backs.

@senanthic Thanks!

Ack, I can't keep up with these name changes. That's 3 names in my time?

I looked it up, Supports For Independence (SFI) from 1990-2003, Alberta Works from 2003-2010, and Alberta Supports from 2010 to present.

Maybe even 4 names in my time? I don't know what came before SFI...

"The truth is, if even our so-called 'climate champions' are backing #FossilFuel infrastructure it means they feel more pressure from lobbyists than from citizens. This has to change.
There is a consistent global #ClimateMajority, that holds true for Canada and yes even Alberta. And Calgary!"

The UCP wants disabled people in Alberta to find jobs and work in order to survive. If they can't work, they shouldn't be allowed to survive. There may be some issues with that...

They are drastically cutting AISH by putting AISH recipients on a new program where they receive much less and must supplement that income with employment.

Note that we already have a social welfare program for people who are able to work, called Alberta Works. There's a reason why the "severely handicapped" are separate and require "assured income".

The Alberta Conservative: votes every election for the petro-cons who are causing the drought that is bankrupting his farm. Will still vote for the petro-cons after bankrupsy and voiciferiously blame the libs and greenies for his grief.

You might remember that this spring, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith headlined a fundraiser with Ben Shapiro in support of this PragerU organization.

"Words aren’t enough. Since stepping onto the political stage, #MarkCarney echos industry talking points supporting pipelines & subsidizing oil companies. Promoting 'decarbonized pipelines' is like Obama & “clean coal.” Neither exists & both perpetuate an increasingly expensive & deadly status quo."
