I'm on leave this week.
I'm second marking resit exams today.
The mark scheme has only a passing resemblance to the exam.
The marking spreadsheet wasn't even built in the same universe as the exam and the mark scheme.

A third person take of the poster session at CLEO/Europe 2025 conference in Munich this June. Explaining contents of my poster on second-order optical nonlinear response of epitaxial rhombohedral boron nitride and observed couplings of blue-violet incident light with defects active in the UV-A and UV-C. Hope a paper would follow this autumn. #optics #physics #photonics #academiclife
That was a remarkable conference. Has always been for the past 20y as I recall ;-)
Today marks my first Obsidian anniversary. It was a year ago today that I created my vault. I'm celebrating the only way I know how: by sharing a screen grab of the graph view of my vault.
Apparently, my vault now contains 1720 notes, 136 attachments and 7332 links, totalling 123 MB. Thanks to bkyle for their Vault Statistics plugin: https://github.com/bkyle/obsidian-vault-statistics-plugin.

The Computer Science and Engineering Department of the Instituto Superior Técnico (University of #Lisbon) is carrying out an open search process for possible candidates for openings for faculty positions to happen in 2026. Today I set up my first #Finkelstein reaction. I've always wanted to do one because the name is so evocative. To my amusement my collaborator and I both got bored in the same meeting and happened on exactly the same procedure buried in a paper from 1921 at the same time. Our screenshots crossed. It was rather hilarious. But now we have some sodium iodide heating with an organochlorine compound in acetone in a pressure tube.
We're feeling lucky! #chemistry #academiclife
And today it's Joana Beato Ribeiro's turn to receive our good luck wishes, as she's defending her PhD thesis in History on the documentary heritage of Fernando da Silva Correia tomorrow, 25 June.

Students discussing (and probably some random tutors further back) during lunch break on the terrace of Bertinoro castle, last week.
It's a wrap! ISWS 2025 was a huge success! 60 wonderful students, 5 brilliant assistant tutors, 11 extraordinary tutors, 3 magnificent keynoters, and 2 visionary & unassuming directors. We've had a great time together with all of you and hope, you've had a safe trip home!

Memories from the last night gala dinner, selfie with some of the ISWS 2025 tutors. It was such a great time! We are missing you all already!
Kudos to our assistant tutors!
Without you this summerschool would never have been possible! You've did a marvellous job! Thank you so much!!!
Congratulations to Quintino Lopes, whose paper about Armando de Lacerda and the Coimbra Phonetics Laboratory (co-authored with Francisco de Lacerda and Ana Simões) was the winner of the 2025 edition of the A. H. de Oliveira Marques Prize for Portuguese History!

And of course we also had yoga class this morning for all of those not interested in (uphiill) running or calisthenics (new group led by Stefano). Mens sana in corpore sano, strictly keeping to our motto ;-)
Good morning ISWS 2025! It's day 04 of the summer school. Today, we are working on our research tasks and will have a relaxing afternoon at the swimming pool before we will be chasing deadlines tomorrow :)
Two legends of the Semantic Web dancing at ISWS 2025 evening activities. We are prod to have Natasha Noy (Google) and Enrico Motta (KMI) as keynoters with us this year.
Having fun, making new friends, socialise & collaborate. This, besides excellent research, was and will always be part of the Semantic Web community :)
