This shot (and another one from Ireland taken in 2009) is one of those rare shots that I've literally stopped gazing mindlessly before shooting it, meditating in its majesty. Where I live, we don't quite get such clouds formations, thus seeing something like that, in a quiet countryside pathway, induces amazing feelings of joy deep inside of me. I wanted to just sit there and gaze, forgetting everything about my problems, and my camera and photography altogether. Luckily, back home, I've realized that I've made two shots of the scene so I was able to merge them in one anaglyph. Making anaglyphs out of fisheye shots is quite tricky as well, but I think this one ended up well. Another strange thing about this anaglyph as well is that the B&W version didn't quite work well it seems; usually, colors cause ghosting and hence anaglyphs perform better in B&W to perceive the depth or the illusion better. However, this is not the case here, where the colored version is relatively better in depth than the B&W!

***Note: I tried my best to match the original colors of the image here on Pixelfed, using the provided filters, since the color space is not recognized and the colors change significantly. I will leave a link in the comments to the one with the original colors posted on Cara.

I am delighted to announce my latest hack: Elite 3D.

This is BBC Micro Elite, but in anaglyph 3D. To enjoy the third dimension, you'll need a pair of 3D specs; red-cyan is a good choice, but five different types are supported.

It's for BBC machines with a 6502 Second Processor, but you can also play it in your browser or emulator.

Full details:

Configuring Elite 3D: elite.bbcelite.com/hacks/elite

Technical information: elite.bbcelite.com/hacks/elite

I recommend you take a quick look at the instructions first, as the built-in configuration tool makes a great introduction to the 3D effect and can help you get the best from it.

But if you can't resist jumping in straight away - and are willing to accept that 1980s anaglyph 3D isn't exactly the future of VR - then click here to play the game in your browser:

Have fun!

I know I said "feature complete", but I’ve found a way to double the resolution of Elite’s anaglyph 3D effect, while still staying within the 4-pixel separation that’s the most your eyes can resolve on a typical BBC Micro screen.

Here's the scrolltext demo using the latest algorithm. Looks good!

I've got a few more things to tweak and some documentation to write, but Elite 3D is getting really close to being ready for release... I just have to know when to stop optimising, I guess. 🙂

Elite in anaglyph 3D is now feature-complete! I squashed the last bug this morning, and the game is now fast enough to play.

The next task is to write some instructions and document how it all works, but I will be releasing this very soon.

It's actually pretty good fun to play, once your eyes get used to the 3D effect. It can't hold a candle to Elite:Dangerous in VR, of course, but this 8-bit version runs on 100% 1980s hardware, and the thought that people could genuinely have been playing this back in 1985 (when the original 6502SP version was released) is pretty cool!

Anyway, watch this space... not long now.

by just for fun 'cause I can :)

Hard to believe that complete set of life's stock parts fits on screen: 22 + 4 blocks. Anything else can be made of these, or by tools made of these, or by tools made by tools made by... Including you and your computer. I am staring at it in transcendental .

makes fun. And now feels easy after if glasses need a tweak :)
