The #WhiteHouse Frames the Past by Erasing Parts of It

As the #Trump administration pulls government websites and data offline, it is selectively stripping away the public record, letting the president declare his own version of #history , #archivists and #historians said.

The head of the National Archives, which has been described as “the custodian of America’s collective memory,” was fired by President Trump in February.

I'm trying to find things to read for a funding application (blog posts, articles, whatever) about archive services as spaces of power, but specifically institutional / national archives (so not stories of how community archives resist power, but how somewhere like the National Archives or a university archive thinks critically about itself as a place of power and then does something practical about it)

any suggestions gratefully received

It comes from a loose coalition of #archivists & #librarians, who are standing athwart #history & yelling “Save!” They belong to organizations such as the #InternetArchive, which co-created a project called the End of Term Web Archive to back up the federal web in 2008; the Environmental Data & Governance Initiative, or #edgi; & #libraries at major #universities such as #MIT & the University of #Michigan.

#Archivists Recreate Pre-Trump #CDC Website, Are Hosting It in #Europe

A team of volunteer archivists has recreated the Centers for Disease Control website exactly as it was the day Donald #Trump was inaugurated. The site, called RestoredCDC.org, went live Tuesday and is currently being hosted in Europe.

Fellow #archivists please help me remember which SAA Council members have blogged about their experiences on Council while serving. Erin Lawrimore and Kate Theimer are the first ones that come to mind, but I would appreciate having my memory jogged for others!

Here are this year's themes. We'd love to see your archive stories each month so we can share them here. And if you have a longer story to tell, consider getting in touch to write a blog post:

I agree rewriting of #history is as old as history itself & the role of #archivists has always been part of #resistance.

Today we have two slightly unique double edged swords.

Never before has being a #citizen #journalist or a citizen archivist been so open & easy for so many.

Both those tearing down and those #preserving have access to the tools, their own respective bully puppets, their own claim on truth.

All who can should think, choose & act wisely & #ethically.

One more presentation in the #OpenResearch devroom about PANDORAE, an open system built to ease access to the fascinating (but closed, for legal reasons) content of the French Web that is systematically archived by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (1+ PB of data across millions of websites, only accessible for researchers on site)
