Forcing them to remain in #detention facilities often in far-flung areas such as an alligator-infested swamp in Florida or the Arizona desert would make it more difficult to fight their cases, because they will be unable to work or easily communicate with #family members & #lawyers to prepare their cases.

…In its 2024 annual report…, #ICE said it detains #immigrants only “when necessary” & that the vast majority of the 7.6 million people then on its docket were released pending #immigration proceedings. Keeping them detained while their case is adjudicated has not been logistically possible, & advocates have raised concern for immigrants’ #health & #welfare in civil immigration #detention. [It is also incredibly expensive]

In rare exceptions immigrants may be released on parole, but that decision will be up to an #immigration officer, not a judge, he wrote.

The provision is based on a section of #ImmigrationLaw that says unauthorized immigrants “shall be detained” after their arrest, but that has historically applied to those who recently crossed the border & not longtime residents.

The #Trump admin has declared that #immigrants who arrived in the #US illegally are no longer eligible for a bond hearing as they fight #deportation proceedings in court, acc/to documents reviewed by WaPo.

In a July 8 memo, Todd M. Lyons, acting director of #ICE, told officers that such immigrants should be detained “for the duration of their removal proceedings,” which can take months or YEARS.

"Yesterday, Donald Trump left his New Jersey bunker to attend the FIFA Club World Cup at MetLife Stadium in Rutherford, NJ. Trump was loudly booed multiple times.

Corporate media tried to act like he received a 'mixed reception,' and lied saying people were cheering for Trump at one point. When folks were clearly supporting the band Coldplay as they came on stage."

"They can blow up a story, hammer it home, hound politicians about it, make it a scandal, make it something everyone is talking about and officials have to answer for. They've done it over and over, most recently with the news that Biden was old, but they're not doing it now [as Trump dismantles democracy and sets masked ICE thugs on immigrants]."

The #Knesset will vote today on dismissing Joint List MK Ayman Odeh. Three prominent US senators including Bernie Sanders condemned the dismissal effort as an attack on democracy. German parliamentarians and Arab local authority heads also oppose the move. The dismissal requires 90 Knesset members’ support.

Hebrew zoha.org.il/138609/

The senators noted that Odeh has advocated for peace, justice, and Jewish-Arab partnership for over a decade, and that the expulsion effort directly responds to his calls for Gaza ceasefire, ending occupation, and a political solution. They warned the move sends a “chilling message” to Palestinian citizens of Israel that their representation is conditional.

Well, the next time someone parrots the tired about #Israel being the “only democracy in the Middle East” line, remind them that democracies don’t expel elected representatives for calling for peace. This is textbook #authoritarianism - using parliamentary procedures to silence dissent and purge opposition voices.

What’s particularly offensive is the deafening silence from U.S. Democratic leadership, the very ones who are complicit in the genocide in Gaza through financing Israel’s war machine. While senators like Sanders, Welch, and Van Hollen find their voices, where are Schumer, Pelosi, and the party establishment? Their absence speaks volumes about how thoroughly they’ve abandoned any pretense of defending democratic principles when it conflicts with their political calculations.

This isn’t just about one MK - it’s about establishing precedent for political purging. Today it’s Odeh for advocating ceasefire; tomorrow it’s any voice that challenges the narrative.

"It appears likely that before the end of this year, a newly appointed GOP-led Federal Communications Commission will approve a measure of deregulation of broadcast ownership. The biggest media companies will grow bigger, and you could see investors who have no current interest in broadcasting enter the business. I want to suggest some language that should go into the prospectus for such a company’s stock offerings.

It would be a warning to investors that they are about to buy shares in a company that will try its best to make money, but that there will be times when something bigger will take precedence.

(I am sure there is, tucked away in the Securities and Exchange Commission regulations, language that would keep any company from saying what I am about to suggest. But for a moment, indulge me as I offer a layman’s version of what I want a company that is in the business of producing journalism to say to potential investors.)

Maybe they could try something like this:"

Every day now we are inundated with these battles. Clips of masked men in unmarked cars ramming drivers and stealing them away. Clips of an agent demolishing a window with a tactical axe. Stories of agents chasing men into medical facilities and terrorizing them and employees. Brutal glimpses into an emerging and sobering reality.

Dispatches From A Collapsing State | Jared Yates Sexton · We Know What This Is: ICE and a War Against the PeopleBy Jared Yates Sexton

From 2019: On #WillemVanSpronsen’s Action against the #NorthwestDetentionCenter in #TacomaWashington

Including the Full Text of His Final Statement

2019-07-14

Excerpt: "On July 13, Willem Van Spronsen was killed by police while apparently taking action to disable the fleet of buses that serve the Northwest Detention Center, a private immigration detainment facility. His final statement, reproduced below, conveys that he was acting in response to the continuous raids and deportations carried out by Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE). His action occurred on the one-year anniversary of a hunger strike inside the Northwest Detention Center and an encampment outside. You can read a list of other acts of resistance that have occurred inside the Northwest Detention Center here.

"We understand why Willem Van Spronsen decided to give his life to interrupt the violence that is perpetrated against undocumented people in the United States every day.

"It is not hyperbole to say that the #ICERaids are targeting our friends and neighbors, people who have lived and worked alongside us for years or even decades. The vulnerability of long-term undocumented people as a hyper-exploitable class has helped billionaires like #DonaldTrump to profit even more than they could have by legal means. To put the icing on the cake, #capitalists then turn to the other workers they are exploiting and tell them that the poverty and misfortunes they experience are the fault of those who are poorer and more oppressed than them. It’s hard to imagine a more cynical strategy.

"The disparity in rights between the documented and undocumented is a construct—just as the disparity in value that the #Nazis constructed between Jewish people and gentiles was a construct. Both are mere inventions; they have no intrinsic existence except as a means for a powerful group to justify violence against a less powerful group. Those who justify obedience to the law as a good in itself stand alongside the Nazis whose laws condemned millions to the death camps, not to mention the racists who passed the #FugitiveSlaveAct and the #JimCrowLaws in the American South.

"Laws are just constructs. They have no value in and of themselves. They often serve to legitimize injustice that people would otherwise take action to oppose.

"The further that the proponents of racist violence are permitted to legitimize invented concepts like slavery and citizenship, the more violence they will perpetrate—up to and including roundups, concentration camps, and mass extermination. We have seen this before, in Nazi Germany and elsewhere, and we are seeing it again today in the United States. The thousands of deaths that take place in the borderlands and the thousands murdered by police are just a foretaste of what is possible."

The #PrivatePrison Industry Looks Forward to Soaring Profits Thanks to #Trump’s Budget

The $45 billion for #ImmigrationDetention in the "#BigBeautifulBill" represented a long-sought win for private prisons.

Matt Sledge, July 10 2025

Excerpt: "In the 2024 election cycle, employees and PACs affiliated with the publicly traded industry behemoths GEO Group and #CoreCivic contributed overwhelmingly to Republicans and Trump.

"Republicans received 92 percent of $3.7 million in contributions affiliated with GEO Group and 96 percent of the $785,000 in contributions affiliated with CoreCivic, according to #OpenSecrets, a nonpartisan, nonprofit research group that tracks official disclosures. When Trump won, the two companies gave $500,000 each to his inaugural committee.

Even though the industry kept profiting from the Biden administration — despite a supposed ban on private prisons — one advocate said it was clear to her why companies went all-in on Trump."
