#StirlingPDF seems great! No longer will people have to upload their pdfs to shady websites just to compress them (I hope no colleague did this 😅)

But Stirling made some incredibly bad web design decisions: stuff jumps around on mouse over. The dark style flashes for a split second before the page turns white. Annoying tooltips appear the nanosecond you move the mouse over an icon and then stick to the cursor. DUDES! This is a wonky 1990s GUI. We should have made progress since then!

United drops a new game:

🎲 Guess the sort code!

Ruled out, by decreasing reasonableness:
* 3-letter code: No.
* Dialling prefix: No.
* Full form of 3-letter abbrev: No. [1]
* Random: Unlikely.
* Distance from me: No.
* Population at last census: No.
* Unicode bytecode for flag emoji: No.
* Degrees of Kevin Bacon: No.
* Height above sea level: No.
* Gross domestic product: No.

[1]: Sorts like 3-letter code, but breaks 2nd letter tie differently.

Oops, just realized that I'm still on 22.04 LTS Kubuntu.😮

Why has there been no warning/popup or something that support has been running out as of April this year!?

Not good!

Time to upgrade to 24.04 LTS on a cozy sunday, I guess.😊

But first...👆
...let me do a backup.👌

Please, stop making me sign up for your "job application handling system". Please, I beg of you.
Having to sign up for every possible job is really exhausting, going through the whole process dozens of times a day.
I don't even have the time to write a cover letter thanks to all the sign-up flows. I've completely lost what I wanted to apply for by the time I can confirm my account.

I think I have wanted to paste *with* formatting maybe twice in my life. Every. Other. GODDAMNED. Time, I have wanted to just paste the DATA I copied from elsewhere, and have it match the place I'm pasting it into.

"Paste without formatting" should be the default. "Paste WITH formatting" should be the behavior you have to explicitly ask for.

#Amazon has a handy button to change your language. And helpfully they've localized the names of each language so you can only tell what they are if you can read that language. Hablo Inglés y solo pequeño Español ... And I'm not fluent by any means.

The native spelling for that language should be the primary one displayed #badUI #badUX

I decided to check out Lemmy, and boy was it confusing! Damn, now I know how newbies who come to the fediverse feels like!

I created an account on an instance, found some "communities" which is what subreddits are called. I clicked a few and tried to join, and then had to login, even though I was already logged in at my instance.

Disney+: hey it looks like you've got two minutes of the last episode in the series to watch. I'll put it in your "continue watching" list.

Me: yeah, that's just all the international credits, no thanks.

<Sees no way to remove items from the list>

Me: Guess I just need to watch a bit more before it realises I'm done.

<Plays a few seconds, gets the "you might like" suggestion, then backs into the menu>

D+: you still got two minutes left on that episode

...

My job for the rest of this day, and maybe the next, is to cycle through 75 items and push, click or type 21 times on each. Excepting position of the first click, all of the actions are exactly the same.

<s>If</s> When a descrepancy is observed during post-publish QA, I get to do one or all of them again.

If I ever manage to write software someone else has to use, a fundamental principle will be that EVERYTHING the program can do is possible to automate.

@jdiller @raganwald Re: your "time pressure plays a role", I was going to ask why anyone would possibly decide on this limit for a "card nickname" field. Then I realized they must have just re-used the limitations for username without even thinking about it.

Which might be people just being thoughtless, but it sure could be because they didn't have any time to give it proper consideration.

Anyway, it's awful. Just terribly #BadUX.

(And I 100% agree on phone numbers!)

Reminder for anyone handling names in a form, database, or whatever: both given names and surnames can have spaces in them. "Mary Ann" is a valid name, and "St. Clair" is a real family name. Allow your users to put in their names properly, and *never* call them "invalid".

(What's actually invalid if you do that is *your name validation logic*.)

The Phone app on my Samsung phone is so infuriating. Even if I have the keypad opened, like I'm *obviously* going to be pressing some buttons to enter things into a phone tree system, it still tries to turn off the screen after *a mere 10 seconds* without any touch activity.

So many phone tree prompts take longer than 10 seconds!

My overall setting is to turn off the screen after 2 minutes of inactivity. But this one app ignores that setting and goes for literally less than 10% of that. #BadUX

Forgetting the contents of Apple's 100 Best Albums.
This is a hilarious example of Marketing team and Product team not seeing eye to eye. This panel shows up next to panels for albums I can instantly stream, but the list is not inside the app, so I can't play the albums there. I have to go to the website, sign in blah blah blah.
There's not even a playlist in the app. It's just a horrible, empty husk of an acquisition mechanic. Who knew Apple music could get any worse 🤷‍♂️

Just learned today that if you open iCloud via the web, YOU CANNOT SEARCH FOR FILES. THERE IS NO SEARCH BAR.

You have to use MacOS Finder to search. And since I don’t log into my personal Apple account on my work laptop…

What is the flipping POINT, then? Should I really just go back to Dropbox? (Or is there a robust non-Google alternative with desktop sync (AND WEB SEARCH WTF)?)
