: The Eurasian oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) is a striking shorebird in the oystercatcher family (Haematopodidae). It measures about 39 to 44 centimeters in length and weighs between 400 and 820 grams. The Eurasian oystercatcher inhabits coastal mudflats, sandy shores, estuaries, and occasionally inland wetlands. It breeds across much of Europe and parts of Asia, favoring open landscapes near water, often nesting on beaches, dykes, or gravel islands. During the breeding season, which usually spans from April to July, the birds are highly vocal and territorial. They are easily recognized by their black-and-white plumage, long orange-red bill, and loud piping calls. In autumn, northern populations migrate to milder coastal regions in Western Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East for the winter. Their diet consists mainly of mussels, cockles, and other shellfish, which they expertly pry open with their strong bills.
