Next was a vital panel on how caste and race manifests, evolves, and reproduces through emotions at CRASSH with Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, Hugo Gorringe, Gopal Guru, and Jusmeet S. Sihra. This is a deep exploration of how people experience caste and racial hierarchies and what it will actually take to dismantle them. Next was an important panel on Dalit feminist perspectives on caste and society at CRASSH with Manuela Ciotti, Rupali Bansode, Shannon Philip, Meera Jatav, and Priyanka Kotamraju. ⭐ 🇵🇹 🇮🇳 Slavery, Mobility, and Identity on the Western Coast of India, Sixteenth–Eighteenth Centuries

"Furthermore, the Portuguese state continued to allow the extraction of labor from communities on the basis of caste. The famed physician Garcia d’Orta, writing in 1563, described such labor extraction from communities deemed untouchable in Portuguese Bassein: “In every village, there is a people despised and abhorred by all, who do not touch others, who eat everything, even carrion [as cousas mortas]. Each village gives them its leftovers to eat, without touching them. Their concern is to cleanse the houses and streets of dirt."

"The caste-privileged elites of the Hindu and non-Hindu religions denied the existence of #caste in public life, and in private, they pretended to be above caste. In their public and private lives, of course, they hardly associated with the oppressed castes, except as their servants and manual labourers. The erasure of caste from public life also helped them protect their inherited caste privileges, as they did not need to self-reflect on their subjectivity." thewire.in/caste/who-is-afraid #india

The WireWho Is Afraid of a Caste Census?Instead of building a robust ideology that can challenge Hindutva – a task they have failed to carry out – many liberals are busy delegitimising social justice politics. Rahul Gandhi has become a target of attack for them because of his insistence on the need for caste enumeration

Did you know #NewAtheism is being ressurected in #India?

I'm not talking about the #FourHorsemen or their white, middle class disciples (but there is a connection!)

- "old #atheism" associated with #rationalism and #communism in a region of South India (#Kerala)
- there, new atheism was introduced in part by dissemination of Western #newAtheists (now spread in #esSENSEglobal's Summer camps and other church-like activities)
- India's new atheism seems linked to #caste and #neoliberal #politics

Have you heard of #HinduAtheism?

Feryl Badiani shared quotes from interviews in her talk, #Atheism in Hindus.

Some themes:
- "#Caste played a unique role in mitigating theism"
- There may have also been an "intersection between #education and caste"

Urban Marginalisation in Kashmir: The Vulnerabilities of 'Watals' in Sheikh Colonies of Srinagar

Socio-economic challenges, limited access to basic amenities, and a sense of exclusion from mainstream society characterise the daily life experiences of inhabitants of Sheikh colonies. Lack of private space, congested houses, and unhygienic conditions underscore the pervasive nature of urban marginalisation within the colonies. A three-part series of essays by the Visual Storyboard team of the Centre for New Economics Studies (CNES), O.P. Jindal Global University, working in Kashmir for a manuscript project focusing on new subaltern voices of communities from the Valley.
