Had an interesting discussion today.

In linguistics, when hiring a postdoc (with some teaching load), you can definitely ask for a trial lesson on, say, the basics of morphology for first-year BA students. If you hold a PhD in linguistics, regardless of your specialty, you should know enough about morphology to do this.

If we wanted to do this in #ComputationalHumanities (or #DigitalHumanities), what might be an equivalent?

Tricky question, huh?

#PhD job in the Dept. of Language and Information Sciences at the University of Lausanne: my colleague Davide Picca has an open PhD position starting on October 1, 2025 in an SNSF-funded project focused on the computational analysis of Charles S. #Peirce’s manuscripts.

Deadline for application: May 19, 2025

Next Tuesday (April 15, 2025), I’ll have the pleasure of hosting @chnunn for a talk:

Introducing Digital Humanities into established academic fields. The example of Computational Theology.

If you happen to be in #Lausanne, feel free to join us at 16:15 in the salle Argand (ANT-4173)!

@neumarcx yes, I know it was @lysander07 et al's* proposal, should have made that clearer.

Please do not generalise from this unfortunate experience that the temp for "structured data topics in the DH community" is low or hostile per se. Please continue to propose contributions from this area!

Also as a way to keep/bring #DigitalHumanities and #ComputationalHumanities together (there will be a talk on this topic by Manuel Burghardt at the @DHdKonferenz).

@mxp Thanks for the text! I think spelling out the Atlantic-Continental divide in #DigitalHumanities / #ComputationalHumanities is really insightful (and I'd love US colleagues to read the text and voice their view on the matter). I share the feeling that the humanities / Geisteswissenschaften difference plays a role here, but I'd like to hear more about how you'd describe it. (I have a vague idea, but I'm not sure it's the same as yours.)

With "Introducing Digital Humanities to Theology", Volume 1 of the Compendium Computational Theology has been published, simultaneously in German <books.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/hei> and English <books.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/hei>. Although the starting point was to introduce theologians to #DigitalHumanities and #ComputationalHumanities, it is also a wonderful introduction to DH in general with great contributors!

💡 A rich and wonderful program at the Computational Humanities Research #CHR2024! Kudos to the organizers @comphumresearch, #AarhusUniversity! Many facets of computational approaches in the Humanities are being discussed. Looking forward to the Lightning Talk session shortly and excited to contribute myself: "Second-Order Observation through AI: Towards a Humanistic Approach to Augmenting Human Intellect."
