The probability that we may fall in the struggle ought not deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just; it shall not deter me.

"that politics failed and we wound up in the Civil War, from which we still haven’t recovered.… Being a Southerner informed me about what happens when a society closes the wagons around itself, when it doesn’t tolerate good journalism or prophecy in the pulpit or truth-telling in the classroom."
Alterman quotes an interview Moyers did with Salon in 2003:
"I think my life, and certainly my career in journalism, have been informed by two things. One was being a Southerner. Whenever you learned about Southern life, you realize that when we drove the truth-tellers out of the pulpits, out of the editorial rooms and out of the classrooms—people who were telling the truth about slavery—"
Eric Alterman offers a touching reminiscence of his friend journalist Bill Moyers, noting:
"This ordained Baptist minister from a little town called Marshall, Texas, somehow became, for most practical purposes, my rabbi."
Alterman asks where Moyers got the fortitude to stick to his difficult and solitary path when he was very much a voice crying in the wilderness, especially in his native South.

A quotation from Marcus Aurelius
Finally, in every event which leads you to sorrow, remember to use this principle: that this is not a misfortune, but that to bear it like a brave man is good fortune.

The rogue backed away. "Let's go."
The barbarian hesitated. "But the reward—"
"Not worth it. Seriously."
"Where's your #courage?"
The rogue pointed a trembling finger at the giant zombie snake. "That ate it. I don't want to be next!"

The #MastoPrompt for Monday 30 June 2025 is:
The poem or story can include the prompt word or be about the prompt word.
@ me, if you like, or just include the #MastoPrompt tag (to allow people to follow or filter their feeds), or keep your work to yourself - all the options are good as long as you're writing.
If you're including an image please do include alt-text if you’re able to.
A quotation from Terry Pratchett
Each man thought: one of the others is bound to say something soon, some protest and then I will murmur agreement, not actually say anything. I am not as stupid as that, but definitely murmur very firmly, so that the others will be in no doubt that I thoroughly disapprove, because at a time like this it behooves all decent men to nearly stand up and be almost heard ...
But no one said anything. The cowards, each man thought.

"Courage isn't just a matter of not being frightened, you know. It's being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway."

Have you heard everyone saying things like: "𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑖𝑡 𝑔𝑒𝑡 𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝑡𝑜 𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙?" or "𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑔𝑒𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙" lately?
What if it doesn't?
What if you end up waiting a long time?
While everyone else has been waiting around wondering what the heck has been going on, I've been going on. Yesterday, my wife and business partner of 35+ years uploaded my newest book, 𝑫𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝒂𝒊𝒏: 𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝑩𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝑮𝒓𝒐𝒘 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒏 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒚 𝑻𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒔, to Amazon and Barnes & Noble. We'll be a few days before we can get out "check copies" - making sure everything is correct and looks good - and then we are in print!
Today marks 73 days since I wrote the first blog post in the series that became the book. So while you've been waiting for normal, I've been making bold! Want to get out of the waiting? Hit sample.dancing.jimcarroll.com and you'll get the first two chapters of the book delivered to your inbox. In seconds. What are you waiting for? Isn't stopping the waiting for the whole point?
Get your sample chapters right now - simply submit, and send.
Visit https://sample.dancing.jimcarroll.com
What do you need to be thinking about? I'll just share the Foreword to the book. It will give you a sense of where I go with it.
Read it.
Then grab the sample chapters.
Get out of waiting.
Get out of normal.
Get into bold!
Your future is waiting.

Fear comes from uncertainty. When we are absolutely certain, whether of our worth or worthlessness, we are almost impervious to fear. Thus a feeling of utter unworthiness can be a source of courage.

As it's #PrideMonth, it's important to note that we should also be grateful to #allies, such as myself. Without people like me, there would be no Pride at all. Think about all the straight people whose job it is to provide permits for parades.
Of course, celebrating the queer community is important, but if Pride is for everyone, then we should also celebrate hardworking #allies like me.
I once had a colleague who was #homosexual and I wasn't even frightened of him at all. That takes #courage.
