I averaged 17.9mph for the ride which was super fast, but I couldn't do it alone. This gang was ripping and we all contributed.

Of course it's not all bells and whistles. Just 33 miles in, four of us faster ones (including me) rode past a nasty railroad crossing with sharp, thin metal pieces at the track near Bartlett, and three got flat tires from it. I was the lucky one. And we fixed two of them, but couldn't fix one no matter what we tried. We stayed together for two hours and we didn't want to leave anyone behind. So we reached out for help from someone who was around the corner and he gave the guy and his bike a ride to the nearest bike shop 5 miles down the road (not on the route, so extra 10 miles). He was amazing, and btw he's from Massachusetts. Massholes help out massholes I guess 😜

We decided to have lunch early because it was late, and we needed some food to cheer us up. White Mountain Cider cooked us delicious Banh Mi with short ribs and fried chicken sandwiches. We got caught in the storm in the early afternoon, but just long enough to get us soaked and cooled down before it got hot again. LOL.

Reviewing some of the 228-pg technical memo summarizing crash data collected as part of Monterey County Regional Vision Zero Plan (RVZP) development process.

"When I explained that I was with a #Pedalpalooza group of 30 #cyclists, and I was in the traffic lane because the bike lane was occupied, his face lit up. He smiled as if he’d just solved a challenge problem. “You caused this because you were in the car lane,” the officer said to me. “You’re legally required to be in the bike lane for your protection.”

…law that pertains to this situation, ORS 814.430, says a #bicycle rider can leave the bike lane if they are overtaking…"

sue them!!

A question for #BikeNiteQ or any other #Cyclists out there.

Is it just my fat, hairy thighs that make anything other than lycra #Cycling shorts uncomfortable?

If the shorts are tight fitting they slide up my legs until they feel like a tourniquet. If they are loose they rub up and down with every pedal stroke eventually leaving my legs chaffed and sore.

Cycling specific shorts don't seem any better than normal shorts.

There is a very excellent new #bike lane on the Victoria bridge, #Brisbane. Truely an exemplar of safely keeping scooter users and #cyclists separate from both traffic and pedestrians.

This post is not about that.

This is a shout-out to whoever it was that forgot which side of the road we drive on, who will now forever be immortalised in this mostly erased and then repainted lane marking. LOL!

kion546.com/news/2025/05/13/ne Reminder to people who bike on sidewalks in the Monterey County seat and its largest city, Salinas. Sidewalk riding is generally allowed in Salinas, except where signs give notice it is prohibited. But it must be done with due caution and reasonable speed, and the person biking must yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal before overtaking and passing. #FietsProfessor says the past 100yrs of #trafficEngineering seems like it was set in stone. The language we use shapes the way people think, "traffic jam / clog" is the language of sewage. And "closing streets" to cars creates #openStreets for children. Also most people find #transportation boring but #freeRangeKids, #SchoolStreets, #BikeBus capture more attention. Make #trafficEngineers argue against the idea of #AutonomousChildren not #Cyclists. @TheWarOnCars

It seems to be tolerated that large machines mow down unarmoured human beings

"In the case of a crash, SUVs and LTVs cause more severe injuries to pedestrians and cyclists than passenger cars. This effect is larger for fatalities than for KSIs, and the fatality effect is particularly large for children... The Injury severity, defined either as ‘fatal versus non-fatal injury’ or as ‘killed or seriously injured (KSI) versus slight injury’. Pedestrians and cyclists are about 44% more likely to be killed when hit by an SUV or light truck (e.g. a van or big ute) compared to a passenger car."

"The streets no longer belonged to the people who lived there, but to huge traffic flows... It took the intolerable toll of child traffic deaths – and fierce activism – to turn Amsterdam into the cycling nirvana of today."
