Forestofglory
#DecRecs is over for now! Thanks everyone who recced a thing during December!

I've been crossposting my recs to DW and you can see them all (and previous years DecRecs) at my DecRecs tag

https://forestofglory.dreamwidth.org/tag/%23decrecs

micah 💫
Day 31 - #DecRecs

My final rec is for one of my new favorite tv shows, Abbott Elementary! It's a mockumentary style sitcom that follows the lives of teachers at Abbott Elementary, an underfunded Black public school in Philadelphia. Particularly focusing on Janine Teages (played by Quinta Brunson!) who teaches second grade and the other teachers she gets to know.

I've been a fan of Quinta since she was working at Buzzfeed, so I was really excited when I learned about this show! And one of the other actors played in Everybody Hates Chris which I also like.

The show is really funny and even the annoying characters are likeable or at least understandable. And there's a slow burn slowburn romance that's finally started to pay off in the fourth season! :annoyingdog:

The show airs on ABC in the US and is on Hulu, Max, and probably other sites too

https://youtu.be/l4lP8roLz3I

#AbbottElementary

Forestofglory
For the final day of #DecRecs I want to do something a little different: self recs!

So please tell me about something you made that you are proud of!

I'm going to do a thread of stuff I wrote in 2024

Asakiyume
Let me share this fabulous version of "Stairway to Heaven" as a last contribution to #DecRecs

Stairway to Heaven--done with/accompanied with gakaku instruments (Japanese classical court music instruments)--and all performed by one guy in Heian court dress. NICE. Also, some of the backing images show a stairway to something very Ise Jingu-esque.

ROCK ON, Heian courtiers, ROCK ON.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnxI0mgAqgY

holo new-ra
#DecRecs here’s a comically large giant manta ray my girlfriend caught that is too big to fit in the aquarium

holo new-ra
#DecRecs here’s me and my friends in our gay little outfits fishing together

holo new-ra
#DecRecs day 27: today i am reccing a silly and fun little game called WEBFISHING. it’s very simple: you are a little animal with a fishing pole and you catch fish at an idyllic campground. you can play it singleplayer but it’s more fun with friends!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3146520/WEBFISHING/

Forestofglory
I couldn't let a reccing event go by with out yelling about The King’s Road: Diplomacy and the Remaking of the Silk Road by Xin Wen so that's today's #DecRecs

I love this book so much! It's about the nitty-gritty of diplomatic travel in Central Asia between 850-1000 CE, and it centers the city of Dunhuang, which was during this period sometimes part of various imperial states in the region but mostly an independent city state. I love that it decenters China!

(1/?)

Soph (they/them)
today I want to #DecRecs the app TypeWise, which takes the revolutionary approach that a keyboard design that was initially created for two hands on a physical machine isn't ideal for a screen

It takes getting used to! But after a surprisingly brief period of adjustment, I am much faster and less prone to typos than with a standard keyboard design

the app uses tiled hexagons for all the keys, so keys have a larger surface area to aim for while fitting nicely together. you can use gestures right over whatever part of the keyboard you're already on, to add a space or to delete something - so you don't have to jump to specific keys located on an edge of the keyboard to take those common actions

caveats: its emoji picker doesn't have a search function so you have to scroll to find the emoji you want; autocorrect (a paid feature) is over-enthusiastic; the company is all-in in favour of AI writing

but overall: cannot imagine going back to a standard keyboard after using this one!

Forestofglory
Tonight's the first night of Hanukah so I thought for #DecRecs today I would rec the lovely Jewish short fantasy story "Seven Commentaries on an Imperfect Land" by Ruthanna Emrys

about finding magic in unexpected places and building community

https://reactormag.com/seven-commentaries-on-an-imperfect-land-ruthanna-emrys/

steph
#Decrecs day 21: Listening to audiobooks at 1.5 speed 😌I get more books read and it’s still plenty slow enough for me to track what’s going on

steph
#DecRecs day 20: I’ve been trying not to do too many food ones but:

chocolate ice cream with peanut butter m&ms on top 😋

Forestofglory
It's the winter solstice here in the Northern hemisphere, so for #DecRecs I'm reccing: Sing for the Coming of the Longest Night by Katherine Fabian and Iona Datt Sharma

I reread this yesterday so I can say with confidence that its extremely good!

It’s a contemporary fantasy novella about two metamores who dislike each other but have to work together to save their mutual boyfriend. The writing is beautiful, the characters are great, and there's so many keenly observed details!

Neon (fandom)
Today's DecRec is another old thing but maybe you haven't seen this before:

A series of Japanese commercials about this long gummy stick (I forgot what they are called):

https://youtu.be/sZsJyCyGBSI

It has drama, it has plot twist, it is a whole story in a series of related ads!

And this series of commercials about Panasonic Homes featuring two cats:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fygaGEP_as

(It's adorable)

#DecRecs

steph
#DecRecs day 19: The novels of Sylvia Moreno-Garcia! I love her protagonists and the way she dismantles and deconstructs colonialism. The most recent one I read was a reimagining of the Island of Doctor Moreau (hers is called the Daughter of Doctor Moreau). Mexican Gothic is a favorite gothic romance of mine. Her books often (always?) include some body horror so be warned.

steph
#DecRecs day 18: Witch King by Martha Wells (author of Murderbot)—a fantastic fantasy novel by one of the best writers living right now. The sequel, Queen Demon, comes out next year. 🎊🎊🎊

#DecRecs day 17: If you like Diana Wynne Jones, there’s an ongoing podcast right now called Eight Days of Diana Wynne Jones by Emily Tesh and Rebecca Fraimow. They’re going through DWJ’s novels by decade and it’s really thoughtful: open.spotify.com/show/6gxtq3nH?

#DecRecs day 16: DNFing books that aren’t good! There are so many amazing books in the world—don’t waste your time on the mediocre ones or ones that aren’t keeping your interest in some way.

Or if a book is difficult and you do want to finish it but you don’t have the brains for it right now, set it aside for a later date when you can give it your full attention.

#DecRecs day 15: Patricia McKillip. Just…anything she’s written. Every fantasy book she writes is so different from any of her others and they’re always so complex and tasty, like what I’ve heard fine wines are like.

#DecRecs day 14: Keep track of what books you read! I use Goodreads, but there’s other platforms (like Storygraph) or you can just keep track in a spreadsheet or a good old paper journal. It is endlessly useful for me to go back and see what I read in a certain year, or how many books in a particularly long series I’ve read, or what books in a specific genre I could recommend to someone else. Even if it’s just the title/author/date you read it—useful!
