What would it take for XMPP to be the next discord?
Hey folks! You probably heard that Discord is speeding up toward enshittification (if not, long story short: public company soon), and maybe you've been wanting out. (You probably *should* at least create a plan B asap even if you go on using Discord as your "main base", just to be safe.)
We did a bit of research with a friend and tested the two most popular alternatives (Matrix/Element and Revolt), here's the write-up of our tests and opinions: https://legaosaure-stuff.neocities.org/DiscordAltTestsEN.html
We did our best to keep it focused on what a not especially techie Discord user would feel useful, and we hope it can help people feel more at ease with at least one option! Feel free to share around =)
(Also feel free to reach out if you find typos, broken links, or outright mistakes. We did our best but it's more than one paragraph of writing so there's probably something ^^)
"Poor me, I scraped every single message from a Discord server with hundreds of members spanning years and reposted them in my own server impersonating the existing one, including using all the original servers' member's PII to mislead people into believing my server is the real one, and you have have gall to ask me to remove it for nearly 5 months! You shameless bully, it's totally okay for me to do this, everything on Discord is public so it's A-okay, it's totally not a breach of trust or law."
Not going to lie, being insulted for protecting myself from thieves does sting. Especially when the insults come from someone who I considered a friend.
So, knowing #Discord doesn't give a shit about PII or data protection, I'm looking into ways to remove my entire presence from it. What's the best way to delete everything? And I mean actually delete, not the BS Discord does where it only removes your name, but leaves all the PII in messages alone.
A little reminder if you're looking for an alternative to #Discord
There's a nice server set up by my friend - @gardiner_bryant on #Revolt
𝐡𝐭𝐭𝐩𝐬://𝐫𝐯𝐥𝐭.𝐠𝐠/𝐝𝐪𝐉𝐓𝟑𝐫𝐉𝐇
Revolt itself is 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 #FOSS
This server is set up for gamers and developers/creators (mostly Steam Deck / Linux currently), so if you're into:
#gaming
#Linux
#SteamDeck
...general nonsense
Come and join! I wrote a post about the server on #Lemmy, too. If you want to read more:
I find it slightly annoying that the #Discord version on Linux is 0.0.xx and has been for-ev-er. You aren't following any of the versioning schemes I know!
VentureBeat: Why Discord founder Jason Citron is stepping down from CEO job | exclusive interview. “Jason Citron is stepping down as CEO of Discord and he has hired game veteran Humam Sakhnini as the new CEO. When the folks at Discord asked me if I wanted to do an exclusive interview Citron about his decision to step down, it was a full circle moment for me.”
With #Discord gradually moving along the #enshittification path - https://www.pcgamer.com/software/platforms/discord-confirms-its-moving-toward-becoming-a-public-company-as-it-hires-a-former-activision-executive-as-its-new-ceo/ - I'm paying more attention to the alternatives.
So a question for the Fedimind: do folks have recommended #Matrix hosts for communities of various sizes? I’m in everything from small 50-person personal Discord servers to 5000-person open-community ones. What's out there with good service and reasonable prices for personal use?
(And are there better alternatives than Matrix?)
Nach 13 Jahren gibt #Discord-Mitgründer Jason Citron den CEO-Posten ab. Ex-Activision-Manager Humam Sakhnini übernimmt die Führung der Chat-Plattform mit 200 Millionen Nutzern. Börsengang steht bevor. #Gaming https://winfuture.de/news,150539.html?utm_source=Mastodon&utm_medium=ManualStatus&utm_campaign=SocialMedia
One step closer to crossing the #enshittification threshold where the users are being squeezed.
I hope your communities on #Discord have an exit plan ready.

I wrote a Discord bot to monitor for CVEs being mentioned in chat, and then it will fetch the details and post it back to chat.
It also has a feature to monitor for new KEV notifications and send them to a dedicated channel
Collab with me. Use it. Abuse it. What ever ya want!
Discord CEO steps down, replaced with former Activision Blizzard CSO as they work towards being a public company https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2025/04/discord-ceo-steps-down-replaced-with-former-activision-blizzard-cso-as-they-work-towards-being-a-public-company/

They're bringing in someone from Activision.
Yeah, that sounds like a great idea...
...for enshitification!
Discord's CEO and co-founder is stepping down

For #Discord, the end-times are sooner than we think.
With the pickup of Ex-Activision Exec Humam Sakhnini, you know, the Call of M̶o̶n̶e̶y̶ Duty publisher, as CEO of Discord, we can effectively say "goodbye" to what Discord is, and "hello" to the complete #enshittification of a service marching headfirst into #IPO.
Sorry ya'll, but we're due to move off another #centralized place we love if we care about the services we get. And it sucks, because Discord has a good UX.
