Good morning.
ChemknitsTutorials on YouTube (Rebecca) makes videos on dyeing yarn. She does it in a more scientific way, as she used to be a science teacher.
I love all the different methods she comes up with to dye yarn. Knitters and crocheters, I think its important and great to know how dye behaves on certain yarns. She also troubleshoots bleeding.
I learned to use shoeboxes to dye yarn.
Check out her videos if you haven't.

AHHH!!! LOOK AT THEM!!!
tomorrow when it's light out I'll take some close up detail pictures to share, but I'm VERY pleased with how these came out
the pillowcases are very fun, bc I prepped them first, when I had energy and my fingers/back didn't hurt
the top sheet may be my least successful attempt ... I decided to fold it a bunch of times before tying bits of it (to save time and my fingers), and I must have tied it too tightly for any dye to penetrate, but I was so worried it was going to be solid purple
the fitted sheet might be my most successful attempt, despite not putting in nearly as much dye as the pillows. I decided to go super minimalist bc I prepped the fitted sheet last and I was running out of time, but what I love about it (which is kinda hard to tell in these photos) is the way the dye didn't distribute evenly in the majority of the fabric. it's not something I did on purpose, the pot just wasn't big enough to really stir the sheet
taking advantage of waking up BEFORE EIGHT by doing a ton of laundry while working on a #dye project I've been meaning to get to for a couple weeks now
I've been needing new sheets forever; Midna loves digging in the sheets with her little claws and now there's a BUNCH of tears and holes in the fabric. I've thought about mending them, but they're knit (T-shirt fabric) instead of woven, so I may just tear the sheets up for yarn or use them for another project, idk
BUT I bought two sets of pale purple (woven) sheets with the intention of dumping them into a #dyebath to make them dark purple. however, since they arrived, I've been reading a lot about #shibori, so I'm attempting some shibori-like dye resists
Midna is very interested in the damp bedding on the suddenly cleared off kitchen island, so bonus kitty photo!
I am scheming some dye schemes over here.
I've had this thrifted cotton homespun for a couple years, and I keep not making a shirt out of it because I already have some shirts with similar stripes.
There are over 3 meters of it so I would like to make something bigger, but I know my life and if I'm going to sit on a garment it needs to be a dark colour. I was an inveterate sitter-on-the-ground even before I had a kid and also developed an energy impairment.
I've been poking at Pixelfed, hoping to find a fediverse alternative to Google Photos. I don't think it's really what I need. But I do have some photos there -- here's a cool one: https://pixelfed.social/p/ddrake/816666846511902567
Copying that here: one thing I did not expect about Peru was the unbelievably rich culture of fiber arts. Weaving, spinning, knitting, dyeing, crochet, knitting -- it's EVERYWHERE. Women all over use woven cloth like this to carry things -- you just bundle up your stuff, tie the thing around your shoulders, and go. From groceries to small children, they carry everything.
These aren't just practical and functional, the patterns and colors are simply stunning!
New #introduction post!
I'm Alicia and I'm a fibre artist (#dyeing #handspinning #felting #needlefelting #weaving #crochet #embroidery #upcycling #sewing) with interests in #mandala #art #psychedelicart #sacredgeometry #neurographicart and #watercolors.
My family and I run a business called @Fibre2Fabric where we dye all sorts of exotic #fibre #yarn, and #fabric.
I live in the country with my partner and our 6 #cats, 3 #dogs, #snake and #crestedgecko where I enjoy my many interests. (#gardening #plants #herbalism #fungi #music #ukulele #piano #dancing #flowart #reading #writing #tarot #poetry #haiku #cozygames and I'm getting more into #opensource / #linux)
When I say flow art, I mean spinning props like #hulahoop #leviwand #puppyhammer #poi #staff #silkfans #firefans etc.
I love #languagelearning. I studied #German and #Spanish as a kid, took #Japanese in uni, and I'm currently studying #ASL #Cree #Tokipona #Spanish and #Chinese. I also dabble in #French and #Latin sometimes and I'm learning #Greggshorthand to write faster. Cree is my favourite language and Spanish is my second.
I've been cursed since childhood with that lovely trifecta of #heds #pots and #mcas. Healing slowly but surely.
Hope I get to meet even more cool people the algorithms would normally drown out on other social media sites. I love it here!
I dyed a t-shirt for bob using low-water immersion after tying it in little bunches with water-soluble thread. The idea of using the water-soluble thread was to avoid white marks — I wanted it to just be “different” in some way in the tied parts, but not to block the dye completely. (Also I didn’t want to have to untie it all afterwards.)
The low-water immersion worked nicely to split out the constituent red (magenta) and blue (cobalt blue) parts of the dye, giving lots of different purples, and the little tied bunches ended up looking like cells or neurons (according to bob).
Photos here of the tied t-shirt before going in the dye bath, plus a close-up and not-close-up of the results. bob has a photo of him wearing it which no doubt he will post in this thread at some point.
I did some dyeing for the first time since November! My second attempt at a green (#10 in the photo), and my first attempt at an orange (#11).
I’ve also added a photo of this green next to my previous attempt at a green (#9), which shows how much difference it can make to use a different blue in the mix. The blue and yellow are in the same proportions in each batch, but the cerulean blue and cobalt blue give very different results. (#9 looks nicer here than under most lighting conditions — non-overcast daylight suits it, but most of the time it looks kinda ugly.)
And finally a photo of my orange and my latest green along with an extremely failed attempt at a purple (#1) — I like these three together and am now pondering quilting patterns for them.
Wow folks, check out this exhibition of the quilts collected by historian and filmmaker Ken Burns. Extraordinary.

Hand-dyeing post 3 of 3: We still had some skeins left, so I blanched madder chips and dyed cotton in the blanching liquid (left, top); then made a dye bath (left, bottom).
Image 2 shows the difference between blanching liquid (orangey, left) and dye bath (red, right). Image 3 shows a closeup of madder on 4ply - I love this colour!
New late night #dye job.
Residency opportunities for fiber artists and writers! In Colorado, two week blocks scheduled throughout 2025, accepting applications now.

The in-progress photos of my hand-dyed patchwork that I previously put on Mastodon are no longer available here since strangeobject.space was shut down, and I have some new ones proving that I did in fact actually finish making them into a cushion cover, so here they are. (This is just one cushion cover — it’s different on each side.)
Looks like bok choy or moss... Didn't turn out like I thought it was going to, but then it never does!
Wonder what it will look like when dry?
WwwoooOooooOo...
