Today, I am grateful for mastodon. Sometimes I browse bluesky, and one look at the comments section sends me straight back here. The kind, constructive tone is such a relief after the toxic tarpit the rest of social media has become.
Perhaps it's because the fediverse is a group of small neighbourhoods, each with their own character and purpose, all interconnected. Feeling a sense of community and belonging makes it easy to see our common humanity, be trusting, generous, and forgiving.
It reminds me of Hain, the ancient civilisation at the heart of Ursula Le Guin's Hainish cycle. In Four Ways to Forgiveness, Hain has become a cooperative of loosely affiliated villages. Each village governs itself collectively, and the villages work together for the common good. People on Hain have equality, self-determination, and freedom of movement—not only on Hain, but anywhere in the galaxy, if they desire. It's a peaceful anarchic utopia.
Le Guin contrasts it with the oppressive, hierarchical planet of Werel, and its recently liberated colony planet Yeowe. Yeowe strives for democracy, but unknowingly replicates many of the inequalities of its oppressor.
Sometimes you've gotta visit Yeowe to realise how good you've got it on Hain.
