Microglia can selectively clear neurons, but what else do they eat? @FChrisBennett & @nachoriko explore a #PLOSBiology study showing that #microglia also cannibalize other microglia, followed by microglial necroptosis Primer: https://plos.io/4f7sXEs Paper: https://plos.io/3Aj1JvE
Microglia are considered long lived, but @cssmity &co show that individual embryonic #microglia die within 3 days after clearing neural debris and are cannibalized by existing microglia, paradoxically leading to additional microglial death #PLOSBiology https://plos.io/3Aj1JvE
Excited to share findings from a collaboration on #Alzheimer's!
Our team contributed RNA-seq analysis to explore how FAAH inactivation influences neuroinflammation and microglial function. This study reveals a paradox: while FAAH inactivation enhances microglial activity, it also escalates inflammation in 5xFAD AD mice. Results could point to FAAH as a therapeutic target in AD! #Neuroinflammation #Microglia #Endocannabinoids #RNAseq #ScienceCollab #bioinformatics
This is a FIJI plugin that can analyze branched structures in a broad range of settings. They started with Microglia, but apparently it's broadly applicable (also works with neurons and even corals). Looks useful for analyzing 2D images.

"Here, we show that microglia in the mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) of mice actively engage in synaptic pruning during early life. Microglial phagocytic activity is induced following birth, regresses upon weaning from maternal milk, and is exacerbated by feeding dams a high-fat diet while lactating. In particular, we show that microglia refine perineuronal nets (PNNs) within the neonatal MBH."

"Taken together, our study demonstrates that members of the Bacteroidota phylum contribute to AD pathogenesis by suppressing microglia phagocytic function, which leads to impaired Aβ clearance and accumulation of amyloid plaques."

"Long-term microglia depletion using colony-stimulating-factor-1 receptor (CSF1-R) inhibitor PLX5622 resulted in increased overall spine density, especially of mushroom spines, and increased excitatory postsynaptic current amplitudes."

"We discuss preclinical evidence related to both neuronal & nonneuronal mechanisms that may be involved, touching upon the relevance of #interneurons, neuropeptides, & specific synaptic mechanisms in translating gamma stimulation into widespread neuronal activity within the brain. We also explore the roles of #microglia, #astrocytes, & the vasculature in mediating the beneficial effects of gamma stimulation on #brain function. Lastly, we examine upcoming clinical trials"
