perhaps your more shrewd observation was blocked in my mind by a more crude line of thought i was having at the time:

"As Rupert Murdoch settled into Donald Trump’s luxury box to watch Chelsea’s victory in the Club World Cup on Sunday, all appeared well with a relationship that has shaped conservative America for more than a decade.

But within hours the US president would call on the billionaire again, this time with demands to not publish an embarrassing letter allegedly from Trump in the 50th birthday scrapbook for Jeffrey Epstein, the paedophile who would later die by suicide in jail.

The next day he made good on that threat, filing a lawsuit against Murdoch and the Wall Street Journal’s parent companies.

The spectacular rupture signals that the 94-year-old Murdoch is weighing whether Trump is losing his grip on the Maga movement over the Epstein saga, according to people close to the media billionaire."

If Murdoch doesn't fold this will be very interesting.

Murdoch is a hard, cold and calculating bastard who is entirely capable of seeing it as something personal which he will see to the end. I expect Trump expects him to fold like the other media organisations.

I'm sure he has appropriate evidence to back up the stories and pretrial discovery could be very painful for Trump's legal team.

There is the possibility of seeing Trump on the witness stand.
