#plannedobsolescence

How it works in 4 steps:
1️⃣ Warranty lengths double until they reach “forever”
2️⃣ Planned obsolescence dies, products become repairable/adaptable
3️⃣ Markets shift to serving real demand, not manufacturing it
4️⃣ Social safety nets (like UBI) become affordable, because artificial scarcity vanishes

My several year-old #Pixel6a received an update from #google this week that dramatically cut the battery life. I've used the adaptive charging method (charges slowly to 'preserve battery life'. This seems to have been for nothing as Google's messaging suggests that not all devices were affected and batteries are a disposable commodity. I guess the unit in batch of batteries that went into my phone degrade rapidly after only 400 cycles. My phone is at 479.

My options are:

- send my phone on for weeks to have them replace the battery
- get a $150 play store credit
- make a sketchy account with something called Payoneer that requires my SSN or id to be uploaded to get $100

Email from Belkin:

« After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to end technical support for older Wemo products, effective January 31, 2026. […] The Wemo app used to control these devices will no longer be supported after January 31, 2026. […] Note: Wemo products configured for use with Apple HomeKit will continue to function via HomeKit in the absence of Wemo cloud services and the Wemo app. »

And that's why I went with devices I could configure using HomeKit, even though it narrowed the selection a lot.

#PlannedObsolescence in terms of #Software and #Hardware is bad.

  • Cuz if people can play the original #Game they bought x years back and continue playing it then they won't buy the full-priced #remaster!

Basically instead of "#LiveService" we also have "#DeadService" to kill good games!

It's like #plannedObsolescence on steroids.

But the really important thing to understand here is that this model is fundamentally *anti-progress*. It's an abandonment of the principles that have allowed us to no longer live in caves and develop agriculture, markets, science, health care, transport etc.

It is fundamentally regressive. And it is being rewarded by capital. It's much easier to do this than it is to work for progress, so guess what will not longer happen?

One cause of the problems of post-consumer waste, is manufacturers intentionally making disposable items instead of durable ones ("planned obsolescence"). Amplified by forced trade rules that stop governments rejecting low quality imports, despite the fact they end up paying public money to manage all the waste created (or charging the public "user pays" fees). While manufacturers, importers and retailers all make bank.

The #philips #3dprinting stuff seems nice on the surface, but we're talking about a company which pioneered #plannedobsolescence and quite literally invented it for electric toothbrushes, so let's see if they change any of the behaviors that actually matter or only ride on a marketing wave of replacement parts almost no one bought anyway

I bought some in the past. They were laughably expensive and really hard to find

E.g. a 3dprinted razor attachment would likely snag in your hair all the time
