Since January 2024, I have been on a completely carb-free diet. No baked goods, no sugar or sweet fruits. In my experience, the restrictions have had a positive impact on my overall health, as well as on fatigue, motivation, and cognitive abilities. In early November, I completed several important milestones in projects and decided to loosen my grip, allowing myself a small reward. Here comes my love for simple but very tasty carbohydrates! #carbfree #diet #health #motivation #cognition #rewards #projects

The other thing I thought of was the prevalence of reading schemes where it's "read 10 books and get a medal" or the like. Motivation research has shown that this kind of unrelated reward can actually undermine intrinsic motivation. It doesn't nurture delight in the actual books. It positions books as a chore or challenge to get through, rather than as a pleasure in themselves.

(see e.g. Alfie Kohn's book "Punished By Rewards")

Every now and again I remember this story from when my kid was a toddler.

Weekly grocery shop. Queueing at the check-out. Toddler eyeing off the Chupa Chup stand.

Just as he’s turning to ask me for a Chupa Chup, an old lady whose dropped orange rolled under a counter asks him to go get it. He goes gets it.

She thanks him profusely, he returns to me, asks for the Chupa Chup.

Now bear in mind he expected nothing for helping out, he was merely resuming his original single-minded mission. And so I gave my originally-planned response: no, sweetheart, you’ve already had a treat today.

AUDIBLE GASPS

Not just from the woman he helped, but all the surrounding adults who had witnessed this sweet moment of toddler helpfulness.

The woman came over and explained to me very earnestly that I mustn’t have seen, but he had so nicely crawled under the counter and fetched her orange for her. She pressed $2 on him, that’s how strongly she felt about it.

So I guess the adults were left with the impression I was a shitty parent who didn’t even notice my very young child wandering off with a stranger, and I was left realising how determined society is to teach naturally helpful/kind kids to expect a reward 😂

#101essays The pursuit of excellence brings deep happiness and fulfillment through emotional resilience, situated at the top of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. However, rewards require consistent effort and small steps. In sports, daily routines and practices lead to successful marathon completion. The initial stages may be challenging, but the ultimate reward lies in the process and daily commitment, bringing joy and happiness. #happiness #excellence #resilience #Maslow #rewards #smallsteps
