Steve Loughran<p>Also: enjoying Scrivener for preparing this. The new version is something you can finally use for technical writing as it has paragraph styes as well as just characters. Scrivener is the IDE for writing.</p><p>A single talk is enough to justify the price: proposal, bio, research. </p><p>Something I've dredged up there is that time in 1999 when I got Microsoft to credit me with a CVE against IE4. Tradecraft Writing<p>Used <a href="https://newsie.social/tags/Scrivener" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Scrivener</span></a> for an article for the first time today. Normally, I write my articles in Markdown or plain text to avoid distraction. Scrivener, in every way, is the absolute opposite of that: bells and whistles everywhere and a novel-sized user manual that doesn't always explain things, but I can see it's appeal for longer works, including magazine-length articles. Plus, I like the idea of being able to package up an article and its associated research.</p>

Ian Robinson<p>I learned today that Scrivener has a Linguistic Focus mode that will highlight the different types of words in your text. I’ve tried <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Scrivener" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Scrivener</span></a>, and its latex support is, IMHO, kludgy. RS, Author, Novelist, Prosaist<p><strong>RegEx for Speedy Story Revision</strong></p><p>Here are the current iteration of these two RegEx search strings. I will update this post to keep it up to date. The \b requires a beginning- or end-of-word to maximize exact matches. The (?: ) is a non-replacing grouping for multiple words with similar issues, <em>and</em> for he/she matches. Depending on your writing, you may want to change the pronouns to he|she|it|they. Open it. Select at minimum RegEx. I also select the name of my drafts folder, which is Manuscript, and Text so only what I want to revise is shown in the binder. Turn off Case Sensitive if on.</li><li>Click Save Search as Collection.</li><li>Provide a name in the dialog (it initially displays the RegEx string).</li><li>Click View &gt; Binder (if not already check marked).</li><li>Click View &gt; Collections (if not already check marked).</li></ol><p>If you need to update a collection, use this procedure:</p><ol><li>Click the RegEx search collection in the binder. This displays it in the search control.</li><li>Copy it from the search control.</li><li>Press the minus button in the + - shown to the right of Collections. This deletes only the selected existing search collection. There is no way to directly update a search collection.</li><li>Paste your revision.</li><li>Follow the first set of instructions to recreate the collection.</li></ol><p>On the iPad and iPhone, RegEx search exists but only finds a single word or phrase at a time. Disappointing, but it works. You will find RegEx which you tap gear icon when using Find. You can't save the search, but I put it in the Notes app so I can reference it easily.</p><p>The image shows Weasel and Hedge Words in use. In the top left, you'll see the search box with the RegEx, and below it my two collections which are titled <strong>🔍Positives and Negatives</strong> and <strong>🔍Weasel and Hedge Words</strong>. Note the highlights. Desktop Scrivener shows all matches, making quick review and revision a snap. I've added "and" and "but" and "ly" to highlight overuse of conjunctions and adverbs. There's also double-word error highlighted.</p><p>May your editing, revising, and review be simple and swift!</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Author</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/WritingCommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WritingCommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/WritersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WritersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Revise" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Revise</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Revision" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Revision</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Editing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Editing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RegEx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RegEx</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/search" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>search</span></a></p>

I found that <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/scrivener" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>scrivener</span></a> saves immediately as a clickable link so I shoved TONS of links and things into a giant file until it started to slow WAY down. Maybe misuse of tools?😏</p><p>I recently moved over to a <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/bbedit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bbedit</span></a> project which seems to have NO limits… well, other than you can't save graphics.</p>
Yesterday's Rose<p>Testing out <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/novelWriter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>novelWriter</span></a> app for <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> projects.</p><p>Bad news so far:<br>- Can't install via <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/chocolatey" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>chocolatey</span></a>...</p><p>Good news so far:<br>- ...But I CAN just install it via <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/pipx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>pipx</span></a> and not waste disk space on yet another bloody random <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Python" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Python</span></a> runtime<br>- Seems to store all of its stuff as individual files in a folder hierarchy, like <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Scrivener" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Scrivener</span></a>. Which is rad. Makes things <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/git" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>git</span></a> friendly.<br>- Dark mode. OH YES.<br>- Actually, I think the whole markup style formatting is a thing that a lot of apps didn't do right and totally should be doing</p><p>I will definitely explore this more as an alternative and maybe even a replacement for Scrivener. Not that there's much wrong with Scrivener, it's just cool to see that the <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/opensource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>opensource</span></a> apps have been catching up while I wasn't looking.</p>
