On renaming AI/AGI and On Singularity

My little brown angle, Nick, as seen in the photo on my shoulder, woke me about 2 this morning wanting food. After feeding him and back in bed wide awake, I started thinking about Artificial Intelligence.

The use of the word intelligence is misleading and incorrect. There is no intelligence involved. There is no comprehension, perception, understanding, and no retention and learning.

It is an imitation machine, a guessing machine that uses statistics to guess the answer to a question.

"Imitation Generated Output” is more accurate. "Use with great caution” should be prepended to every output.

Silicon Valley shiny object chasers fantasize about Singularity, that point when AI machines become self aware and self improving.

Singularity would simultaneously lead to insanity due to the consequences of that awareness, and perhaps self-termination. An interesting proposition.

Regulate AI.

A spaceship lands on an alien planet with intelligent beings. The beings direct the ship to a landing pad some distance away from their city.

When the platform opens, the beings discover that the ship is populated only by robots. They greet each other.

"Where are you from?"
"Earth."

"Congratulations on acquiring interstellar technology."
"Thank you."

"How come the beings who built this ship didn't accompany you?"
"They started building it. We finished."

Zoomposium with Martin Bogdan: “When AI gets bored – paths to (artificial) consciousness”

What if a machine felt boredom?
And: How close are we to the vision of the digital self?

Prof. Martin Bogdan talks about brain-computer interfaces, artificial consciousness, spiking neural networks – and why boredom, of all things, could be a possible indicator of true intelligence.

What can AI teach us about consciousness?
And how do we assess risks when machines suddenly feel more than we would like?

Currently reading ‘More, Everything, Forever’ by Adam Becker (great read so far) and learned that there exists a Singularity University in the US. Even in the Netherlands there is a SingularityU. Luckily, looking at their website, they seem to live in 2019. :-)

@glyph I have never worried about the #Singularity because in the late nineties, on two separate occasions, I spoke at length with two (then and still today) fairly well-known Ayatollahs of the movement.

They both made certain to mention that they thought I was smart—perhaps even approaching as smart as they thought they were!—and so they were candid and enthusiastic with me. Neither had studied biology (ahem ahem obviously), and both genuinely were eager to share ideas with a PhD student in molecular biology.

When I pointed out that exponential growth always, but always, leads to system collapse in nature; when I pointed out that in a universe finite in space and time, this is the rigidly necessary requirement of arithmetic, they both responded nonverbally: with a dismissive wave of the hand.

In short, the entire movement is based on the belief that Technology is Magic.

At the time I had not reached the level of cynicism to see where it would go in thirty years.
