If you enjoy solarpunk stories, you may enjoy Jonathan Lethem 's book "the arrest": the story centers on Sandy, who used to be a writer in Hollywood before the worldwide "arrest" that basically ended industrial civ. He now lives in New England with his sister's farm community where he assists the butcher and transports food between various farms and people who live on the outskirts of their area. Things are calm until one day his old producer friend from Hollywood literally rolls up in a giant armored vehicle made out of an old tunnel digger...and it runs on nuclear power! Arriving like a personification of the old America, will the new arrival tear the community apart with his offers of free espresso and bawdy stories of his travels from California?
I really enjoyed this book for many reasons. I was impressed with the extent to which the author seems to have a pretty good idea of what re-localized life might be like, and how the movement of food is central to it. Also how nothing much happens, and how all the food is tasty .
He explores a particular kind of "threat" to a more-or-less successful post-industrial life: the re-emergence of the "old ways" of thinking and being in the world - extreme resource use, a "fuck you, I got mine" attitude, being walled off from the land and other people, and wanting to re-create or keep alive the "old ways".
Often I think the antagonists/threats in solarpunk stories are kind of unrealistic and overly dramatic, so it's nice to see a more nuanced story. Plus it's all done with a bit of humor, which I appreciate.
So if you are interested in solarpunk, I think you'd enjoy Jonathan Lethem's "the arrest".
