Hebrew by Inbal<p>While wandering through Savannah, I stumbled upon something truly special—Congregation Mickve Israel, one of the oldest Jewish congregations in the U.S., founded in 1733. </p><p>As an Israeli Jew, stepping inside this historic synagogue filled me with pride and warmth. In poems, he refers with seeming tenderness to a <a href="https://babka.social/tags/synagogue" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>synagogue</span></a> he passes on a walk, to the Jewish cemetery where he wanted to be buried — and is.</p><p>Saba was new to the <a href="https://babka.social/tags/book" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>book</span></a> business when he leased the store from the Jewish community in 1919. World War I had just ended, <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Italy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Italy</span></a> was in a nationalistic fervor that led to <a href="https://babka.social/tags/Mussolini" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mussolini</span></a>’s rise. Saba had barely overcome a crisis in his marriage and a bout of the depression that would plague him the rest of his life.
