More than 20 states sue Trump administration over frozen #AfterSchoolCare, #SummerPrograms and more.

Some of the withheld money funds after-school and summer programming at Boys & Girls Clubs, the #YMCA or #PublicSchools, attended by 1.4 million children and teenagers nationwide

Excerpt: "At the East Providence summer camp, Aiden, a rising third grader, played tag, built structures with magnetic tiles, played a fast-paced game with the other kids to review addition and subtraction, learned about pollination, watched a nature video and ate club-provided chicken nuggets.

"Veteran teachers from his school corrected him when he spoke without raising his hand and offered common-sense advice when a boy in his group said something inappropriate.

" 'When someone says something inappropriate, you don’t repeat it,' teacher Kayla Creighton told the boys between answering their questions about horseflies and honeybees.

"Indeed, it’s hard to find a more middle-of-the road organization in this country than the Boys & Girls Club.

"Just last month, a Republican and a Democrat sponsored a resolution in the U.S. House celebrating the 165-year-old organization as a 'beacon of hope and opportunity.' The Defense Department awarded the club $3 million in 1991 to support children left behind when their parents deployed for the Persian Gulf. And ever since, the Boys & Girls Club has created clubs on military installations to support the children of service members. Military families can sign up their kids for free.

"Aiden’s mother has started looking into afternoon child care for September when kids return to school in Rhode Island.

" 'It costs $220 a week,' Reyes said, her eyes expanding. 'I can’t afford that.'

"The single mother and state worker said she’ll probably ask her 14-year-old son to stay home and watch Aiden. That will mean he would have to forgo getting a job when he turns 15 in the fall and couldn’t play basketball and football.

" 'I don’t have any other option,' she said.

"At home, Aiden would likely stay inside on a screen. That would be heartbreaking since he’s thrived getting tutoring and 'learning about healthy boundaries' from the Boys & Girls Club program, Reyes said."

Dear Friends,

My disability is going to run out soon. The SSA has sent me mail to this effect.

I've been tutoring in math about 1.5 years now. Unfortunately, the volume of students I have currently won't make up for the loss of my disability income.

So I need more students. I tutor prealgebra, algebra 1 and 2, precalculus, calculus 1 and 2, and SAT Math. I've tutored children, teens and adults.

I can tutor French too, but you need to be okay with the French-Canadian accent.

I *could* tutor topics outside the list above, but we'd have to discuss it.

DM me for more information.

Thank you!

Route Fifty: New research: Done right, virtual tutoring nearly rivals in-person version . “Until recently, virtual tutoring had scant evidence that it works very well, with few rigorous studies of its effectiveness. But new findings, including two recent studies from Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Research and Reform in Education, are beginning to offer a different narrative: Done […]

"When's your holiday vacation?"

"I don't have one."

"Oh? I'm sorry."

"Well, I am on a kind of vacation because in December the tutoring jobs dried up."

"Oh, what do you do during this forced vacation? Anything fun?"

"Yes. I do math. "

True story. I'm plugging some holes in my math skills. I used Khan Academy to review my math prior to tutoring it, and it left me with some gaps. :hide_the_pain_harold:

I'm plugging some of those gaps right now.

Weird time to throw this out there, but I’m still looking for work! #getFediHired #getFediGigs #lookingForWork #tech

Contract or permanent, part time or full time, doesn’t matter! I’ve learned a lot of Rust recently and am proficient in C++, C, Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, Linux, Cloud stuff, HPC, chemistry, simulations, MPI and scaling! Mostly backend but I can, and have, done full stack work on React!

What I’m mostly looking to do is help build software that helps people, so I’m NOT interested in “AI”, defense, finance, oil+gas, startups, or anything of that sort. If you know of open positions or even if you’re looking for someone to help on a project, let’s chat! I make a mean fucking
#jupyterNotebook, too.

I am also totally available to tutor chemistry, too.

Boosts welcome and appreciated!

I’m teaching 2 White Australian kids English, 2 French American kids French, and 2 China Chinese kids Mandarin. I was born in the US, and my heritage is mixed Asian and European, also I speak 7 languages. But I’m tickled pink that all of their parents who are native speakers couldn’t help their own children with their languages, and they had to get help from a non-native speaker (English is my first language, but I don’t consider it as my native language, since I’m not Anglo, and Mandarin isn’t my native language either as I was not born in China). #teaching #tutoring #languages
