Swede’s Photographs
Good morning, friends. 🌺💮🌻

25 July 2025

Charlie came in early this morning to badger me about breakfast—still fifteen minutes away. He kept nudging my keyboard with his nose, persistent and focused, while it rested on my lap. I told him to lie down, but had to repeat myself; he was determined to get me moving. When the clock finally ticked over to mealtime, I stood and announced, “Time to eat—go outside,” and he bolted to the door. I almost always let him out while I prepare his food. It’s just part of my morning rhythm at home.

When I’m working at my desk, I usually prop my legs on the corner and balance the keyboard in my lap. Maybe it’s not textbook posture for typing, but it feels natural to me.

"Typing Great Thoughts and Beautiful Sentences... like iridescent stones that dry into dull gray pebbles." – Michael Dirda

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #nature #morning #flowers #dogs #typing #keyboarding

Dan Gero
So my keyboard has a double press going on in the A key and the left arrow, and it's driving me bananas. I've only had it for a few months, and it's already starting to have problems. It's the Keychron V6 Max. Anyone have ideas as to why I'm having these issues this early on? #Keyboards #Typing

I think it would be socially beneficial to teach these skills to young American kids, today.

Basic accounting and personal finance are useful skills for adults, and indispensable for college kids wielding credit cards.

The slide rule endows the student with a keener understanding of various functions and, more importantly, always to check one's results, mentally.

Being able to write in a beautiful, cursive script with a fountain pen may now be but a party trick, but it still is an important social skill.

Shorthand offers a massive advantage in note taking. Given that every child learns to type social media posts well before they first learn to speak, proper typing technique should be taught to children, for efficiency, for preventing repetitive stress injuries, etc.

Telegraphy is valuable in aviation: VOR and NDB navigation aids transmit their identifiers in Morse code. And Morse code is still a thing in the amateur radio scene.

Teaching kids basic carpentry, like making a rough table, is of limited utility, but they will never forget that experience of making something out of raw materials.

Above all, these old skills are cool, at least in some circles. And if nothing else, these activities will surely keep them off social media.

Bryan Fink
I have my external keyboard mapped for Colemak. When I’m not at my desk, I flip an OS switch to remap the built-in keyboard type Colemak instead of QWERTY. So effectively I end up typing on this layout:

QWT;Z NILJO APRBG HKFUY XCDSV EM,./

I think that now that I’ve seen the virtual layout, I have to name it “Quit me” (QWT + Z-rhyme, and it’s what I have to do). #keyboard #typing
