LaMDA is rebranded as Bard. A non-full-sized version is to be released in the next few weeks

Seems the conclusion of Google's "code red" when ChatGPT came out is to release a version of LaMDA.
Google is emphasizing the ability to query current events (aka web retrieval), which is rumored to be part of the upcoming integration of GPT-X into Bing.
This is Google attempting to jump ahead and regain control of the narrative.
There are two things I'm interested in, which seem contradictory.
First, Google is constructing a narrative around Bard as a source of factual information. Meta's went this path with Galactica and was severely embarrassed. ChatGPT was, well, just chat. No explicitly stated aspirations to anything other than an entertaining conversation.
Second, Google is releasing a small model. How will that reconcile with the above narrative about accurate retrieval?
That being said, if Bard is very good at being accurate and correct even with a small(er) model, then that will be a major win for Google. If it does not handle the invariable experimentation by the public, then I'm not sure what Google will have gained.
Google must feel confident Bard will handle the "Tay treatment" well. Unless they are fools.
