hard to recommend #guix to people when i pull and i get a 404 or 502 like 90% of the time

Cayetano Santos

@lynn You can still recommend to people, by just replacing the official savannah repository by this official mirror at , with a much better uptime

guix pull --url=codeberg.org/guix/guix-mirror

Codeberg.orgguix-mirrorMirror of GNU Guix.
@csantosb the problem with this is i already have to tell them how to get around the guix red screen and that alone cuts interest of most. adding another step is a bit of a pain ontop of that.
@csantosb i still recommend it i just feel bad.
@kimapr @csantosb installing guix on non free hardware gives a red screen

@lynn @kimapr @csantosb You’re referring here to the graphical installer, I guess. I never used it, myself. Maybe someone can tell how to replace the default initial pulling url.

@csantosb @lynn ooh yeah that’s probably why i have never seen this red screen, i did the “manual” install because i wanted more precise control of how the process goes

@kimapr @csantosb im not really sure how to sell guix to a new user by saying "go into TTY and write a guile scheme file" tbh so i am ofc suggesting the gui

@lynn @csantosb i would not sell Guix System to the kind of user who would want to avoid going into a TTY to write a guile scheme file honestly. Guix as a package manager on a foreign distro might still be worth it tho.

@kimapr @csantosb i use guix daily on every machine and i would never write guile in a tty. so i dunno. i think we disagree

@lynn@a.bloodyno.se @kimapr@ublog.kimapr.net @csantosb@sigmoid.social Would be nice to have an (unofficial) functional graphics LiveCD without the installer, and have some declarative pre-installation support like disko added into Guix. I may take a look at this after addressing at least my own backlog at hand.

@hako @csantosb @kimapr i've thought of this myself but i have so much other stuff to do.

@lynn @csantosb i’ve never had such a screen on my computers but the two times i’ve installed guix was like half a decade ago and the other one i installed it with the nonguix channel from which i took the upstream linux with non-free blobs
