@Techmeme AWS is the crown jewels, and it looks like Amazon execs are trying to cut its way to growth, which is well known to never work. Research has shown layoffs hurt companies in the long run. Repeated downsizing is a death spiral; investing in people is the way to growth. These repeated layoffs appears to be part of a bigger pattern, raising prices, making Prime worse, and filling the site with ads. All of these may boost short-term profits but are terrible for long-term growth.
@Techmeme Also there's an interesting claim in here of a shift in cloud computing and what customers now want: "Customers aren’t coming to the cloud for VMs and ludicrously expensive network anymore. They want higher levels of abstraction that AWS has historically been terrible at delivering."
