@Techmeme Recommendations are hard to do well. They depend a lot on the quality of the behavior data (wisdom of crowds fails with astroturf and shilling) and optimizing for the right metrics (not clicks please). These problems are even more severe with ephemeral things like news or social media posts because of cold start, even easier to succumb to manipulation or optimize for clickbait. Not surprising that even experienced engineers struggle with this.
