Cave of the ring-bearing doves, Kizil Cave 123, Xinjiang, China, Humboldt Forum. Colors on clay, ca. 550.

Kizil Cave 123, cave of the ring-bearing doves. A unique reconstruction of a cave temple with original wall paintings. Imagine stepping in from the valley: on the side walls you see two almost identical large Buddhas - their robes originally decorated with gold - emitting smaller Buddhas. This refers to a miracle in which the Buddha preaching to a large crowd multiplied himself. This amazing spectacle led to the mass conversion of the gathered people. The central Buddha statue is now lost. The gilded body halo (mandorla), exhibited in the niche here, once belonged to a seated Buddha. Such a wooden sculpture could be taken out and carried along in a ritual procession. The golden flames symbolise the Buddha's enlightenment reached through meditation. This enabled him to perform miracles, like multiplying himself.
