Well Damn. So my #Alienware m15 R5 *seemed* to finally have a working HDMI port after a fresh install of #Debian stable. Then I installed the #Nvidia drivers and... poof... no more external display.

So I still have a two year old laptop with a great GPU, tons of ram that can't be used with a monitor.

And my main workhorse, an #Asus from 2019 that works just fine.

Sometimes I literally just SSH into the "good machine" to put it to work with #Pytorch.

If only they did this years ago!

I've tried many many times to ditch Apple but have been unsuccessful because ultimately their devices are NICE to use. I'd been going about it the wrong way: swap apple device with budget alternative.

Well, this time I took a different path -- go all out on a laptop alternative.

I ended up with the MASSIVE Alienware M18 R2 and seems I might hang on to this big boy for a bit more making my Apple hiatus a tad big longer hopefully enough to wean me off!

I'm amused to find that while my #Alienware laptop does generally make for a terrific machine learning rig, under full load I have to place some wooden sticks underneath it for an airflow gap or my training throughput drops by over 50% as it throttles back dramatically to keep temperatures pegged right at max.
