From what I've read up to now, Google is very busy to save their arse. Google is Keeping Pixel phone sources now to it self, because there a chances that Google will be hacked up and divided up in smaller companies which will have to compete with each other, just like that process Ma Bell phone Company in the 1960s Of The last century

Do you remember the phrase?

We don't have to

We don't want to

We're the f%cking phone company!

Why would you be so masochistical and go to a totalitarian controlled ecosystem?

Just use your Android as you are used to and hack the vanilla Operating System in a manner that it is usable and enjoyable to you

On apple you will be torturing yourself and you will be paying them premium for crappy Hardware

Dang, it sounds like #Google is really trying to kill #FOSS #Android OSes.

What are my #AOSP peeps planning to do?

If OS updates get a lot slower because of this, I might have to go back to iPhone. 😭🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

UPDATE: This update from the #CalyxOS project helps answer some questions: https://calyxos.org/news/2025/06/11/android-16-plans/

It would seem that all Pixel devices will require a lot more work to port Android 16 to. It's not impossible, by any stretch, but Google has absolutely stopped helping the community in any way.

This is very bad news, all around. Not the worst news, by far, but quite bad.

A while back @arthur told me about the super cool T-Mobile eSIM trial which was the perfect solution for what I was looking for. Interestingly, any time Verizon sucks I tend to have better TMobile coverage.

The one place where I needed T-Mobile to shine was at the top of our new property and… Wow, what a flop! TMO’s 5G sucked more than VZW’s LTE.

So I guess no #Calyx for me.

Anyone have ideas on how I can rent or borrow a T-Mobile/Sprint device for a weekend? It’s just to see how their service is down on the farm. OMG I loved writing that.

I’m considering a Calyx subscription which runs on TMo/S network but they aren’t very helpful w/ try before buy, or refunds if it doesn’t work out. Ho hum.

I'm planning to get rid of #Google and Meta a fatr as possible. While Meta is kind of straightforward, Google gives me more to consider and may result in me buying a new phone. I would like to stick with #android and limited it down to some choices, but need help in deciding and fresh ideas. What would you do?

If you like to boost, feel free to do it ;)

Edit: I may need my old phone with Google service for some things. Not yet clear/decided.

One year later… Inception! 👀

The #Fairphone5’s front camera is working well (with an impressively smooth refresh rate) on #postmarketOS. 🚀

Shot from another #Fairphone 5 running #CalyxOS, that I actually bought a couple of hours after the original post ⤴️

Thank you so much for what you do, @postmarketOS! ❤️

Am I missing anything or are all the existing operating systems for #smartphones in the #USA really limited to
1. #graphene
2. #calyx
3. #Lineage
4. #Pine/Fairphone
(Which are all open source & privacy respecting but are/work with phones that aren't anywhere near rugged standards.)

5. #windows
6. #android with google
7. #chrome
8. #ios /apple
9. #Mac
(Which are all virtual monopoly parts, government partners & thusly fascist entities, who love spying on their users, that have rugged smartphone options.)

?

As in my tech updates I'm still looking for an open source operating system that can work on a #rugged smartphone (cases available for the flimsily designed hardware don't count as the device itself being rugged).

I'm using #CalyxyOS on my phone, using #microg as location service.
Now hearing that #mozilla will shut down its location provider, I checked my settings and noticed I can't choose the installed location backends like f-droid.org/packages/helium314 anymore. Only a swipe for Mozilla and one for local storage.
Is this local backend now integrated, and is this change by #calyx or microg, that I can't choose more backends anymore?
