Anyone else noticing an absolute boom in Adonis ladybird (Hippodamia variegata) numbers this summer compared to previous years? I normally see perhaps 2 per year but almost 100% of sites I have visited this year have had at least 1-2, so running total is closer to 30!

Recently I learned that all across Europe, because the colour red is associated with that Mary out of the Bible, the red beetle with the black spots is called "ladybird" or "Mary's beetle" or similar, in many different languages.
Which led me to wondering, what did all these people call the ladybird before the arrival of Christianity? Was there another naming convention? (And please don't say "Coccinellidae")
Oft wird bei mir nach der Larve vom Asiatischen #Marienkäfer (Harmonia axyridis) nachgefragt. Der Käfer wurde 2004 in D zur Schädlingsbekämpfung eingeführt. Interessanterweise wird an ihm geforscht, weil er - im Gegensatz zu heimischen Arten - gegen viele Krankheiten immun ist. Eine einzelne Larve kann bis zu 1200 Läuse fressen.

Wenn ihr so einen kleinen stacheligen Minidrachen seht, dann seid lieb zu ihm! Das sind Larven von Marienkäfern! 
Die Larven fressen Unmengen Blattläuse. 
Also wenn sie an einem total abwegigen Ort ist, könnt ihr sie vielleicht wohin bringen, wo Blattläuse sind. Sonst aber eher einfach in Ruhe lassen.
Die Larven können unterschiedliche Farben haben. Die da ist orange, es gibt auch rot und gelb und sogar blau. Und es kann mehr oder weniger Farbe dabei sein. Aber der Körper schaut immer ungefähr so aus.
Grundsätzlich sind natürlich alle Lebewesen "Nützlinge". Aber fertige Marienkäfer sind bei den Menschen besonders beliebt. Vielleicht können sie zur Bewusstseinsbildung beitragen, dass nicht alles, was kreucht und fleucht, gleich vertrieben oder umgebracht werden muss.
